Zusammenfassung This book investigates the speech of non-ethnic Fulfulde speakers in Maroua, Northern Cameroon, focussed on the Christian community, where the language is adopted as evangelistic instrument beside French. Three key reasons motivate our investigation. First: Context - Fulfulde is embedded in a multilingual contact situation with Indo-European languages (French, English) and many other local languages belonging to Afro-Asiatic, Nilo-Saharan and Niger-Congo phyla. Second: Fulfulde as lingua franca in the region. This status is unique compared to the situation in other countries such as Senegal, Chad or Sudan where it is mainly an intraethnic medium of communication. Third: In contrast to the common perception of Fulfulde as the language of a Muslim community - here we are targeting the Christian Fulfulde speakers who share the language as well as the Bible (translated into Fulfulde) as common goods for interethnic communication in their religious activities.
In Conquest and Construction Mark Dike DeLancey investigates the palace architecture of northern Cameroon, a region that was conquered in the early nineteenth century by primarily semi-nomadic, pastoralist, Muslim, Fulɓe forces and incorporated as the largest emirate of the Sokoto Caliphate. Palace architecture is considered first and foremost as political in nature, and therefore as responding not only to the needs and expectations of the conquerors, but also to those of the largely sedentary, agricultural, non-Muslim conquered peoples who constituted the majority population. In the process of reconciling the cultures of these various constituents, new architectural forms and local identities were constructed.

Toward the Decolonization of the Europhone African Novel is a treatise on the problematics of language choice in Europhone African literature. Vakunta’s research is rooted in the notion that the postcolonial African fiction writer is at a crossroads of languages, groping for linguistic re-orientation. Using the prose of fiction of Patrice Nganang, Ahmadou Kourouma, Mercedes Fouda, Nazi Boni, and Gabriel K. Fonkou as corpus, he contends that postcolonial African fiction is an offshoot of a linguistic tinkering process that enables writers to tinker with the language of the ex-colonizer in a deliberate attempt to divest indigenous writing of its hegemonic vestiges.

This study teases out the nexus between text typologies and translational paradigms. Camfranglais fictional works are not canonical texts; rather they find a niche in the corpus of peripheral ethnographic texts that require an interpretive approach to translational practice. Translators of Camfranglais literature cannot but be like the texts they translate - at once multilingual and multicultural. Given the Polytonal and multilingual composition of Camfranglais literary texts, the onus rests with translators charged with the onerous task of bridging communicative gaps to conceive models that are germane to the translation of these multi-coded texts.
