Os textos que compõem esta coletânea foram apresentados durante a II Jornada Discente do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciência Política, organizado por discentes da Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO) entre os dias 9 e 11 de outubro de 2019. O tema do evento, Estado, Democracia e Sociedade: desafios contemporâneos, tornou-se o título desta publicação que visa divulgar os trabalhos científicos de pesquisadores e pesquisadoras e promover um debate qualificado acerca da complexa interação entre a sociedade civil e as instituições políticas e estatais na contemporaneidade. Assim, foram selecionados doze artigos que refletem alguns dos principais tópicos abordados durante o seminário, divididos em três seções: Relações Internacionais, Brasil sob Perspectiva e Direitos Humanos. Direito, estudos culturais e sociabilidades políticas é uma obra para ser lida tendo em conta que resulta de um amplo contexto da formação do campo em pesquisa das Ciências Sociais no Brasil. Insere-se no conjunto de contribuições intelectuais de um grupo de pesquisa fundado há mais de 25 anos junto à área de História da Universidade Federal Fluminense ? o Laboratório Cidade e Poder (LCP). Ao longo de sua trajetória, o grupo buscou unir pessoas em torno de questões relevantes, discutidas e compartilhadas para se pensar, com a História, o Direito e as Ciências Sociais no país.
História Transnacional e Global
Esta obra aborda o processo de circulação transnacional de ideias e apropriações culturais frente às dinâmicas sociais de passagem à modernidade. Tem como ponto básico de reflexão os debates entre e sobre campos intelectuais e científicos, ocorridos desde o século XIX até o tempo presente. Visa o compartilhamento de resultados de pesquisas empíricas e trocas científicas sobre as diferentes posições epistemológicas, políticas e ideológicas de campos intelectuais variados das Ciências Humanas (História, Arte, Sociologia, Medicina Social, Direito, Psicologia Social, Economia, Saúde e Assistência Social). Destaque é dado a dois aspectos: 1) ênfase na questão nacional, que envolve uma teia complexa de problemas atinentes à busca e análise das fantasias de autenticidade e originalidade em diferentes formações histórico-sociais; e 2) ênfase no processo de secularização de ideias e práticas sociais e culturais, que implica a retirada do poder jurisdicional das religiões e a constituição das instituições políticas modernas.

Ambition, Federalism, and Legislative Politics in Brazil
Ambition theory suggests that scholars can understand a good deal about politics by exploring politicians' career goals. In the USA, an enormous literature explains congressional politics by assuming that politicians primarily desire to win re-election. In contrast, although Brazil's institutions appear to encourage incumbency, politicians do not seek to build a career within the legislature. Instead, political ambition focuses on the subnational level. Even while serving in the legislature, Brazilian legislators act strategically to further their future extra-legislative careers by serving as 'ambassadors' of subnational governments. Brazil's federal institutions also affect politicians' electoral prospects and career goals, heightening the importance of subnational interests in the lower chamber of the national legislature. Together, ambition and federalism help explain important dynamics of executive-legislative relations in Brazil. This book's rational-choice institutionalist perspective contributes to the literature on the importance of federalism and subnational politics to understanding national-level politics around the world.

The Atlantic Forest
The Atlantic Forest is one of the 36 hotspots for biodiversity conservation worldwide. It is a unique, large biome (more than 3000 km in latitude; 2500 in longitude), marked by high biodiversity, high degree of endemic species and, at the same time, extremely threatened. Approximately 70% of the Brazilian population lives in the area of this biome, which makes the conflict between biodiversity conservation and the sustainability of the human population a relevant issue. This book aims to cover: 1) the historical characterization and geographic variation of the biome; 2) the distribution of the diversity of some relevant taxa; 3) the main threats to biodiversity, and 4) possible opportunities to ensure the biodiversity conservation, and the economic and social sustainability. Also, it is hoped that this book can be useful for those involved in the development of public policies aimed at the conservation of this important global biome.
