This volume was first published by Inter-Disciplinary Press in 2013. In the contemporary era, the subject of interculturalism is common in academic discussion however these questions of diversity and integration remain vague and in many cases the terminology is unconsolidated as its linguistic root – culture – remains equally ambiguous. As part of the Diversity and Recognition hub, the Inter-Disiplinary.Net project leading to this volume, brought together researchers from different disciplines to explore how these issues affect meaning and identity. Researchers from Australia, Turkey, Canada, Finland, Russia, United States of America, Belgium, South-Africa, China, United Kingdom, Ukraine, Romania, Scotland, Barbados, Ireland, Germany, Slovenia, Poland, and Spain presented arguments and maintained discourse on a wide array of topics emerging from interculturalism and the development of new meanings and identities.
Issues of religious diversity in the workplace have become very topical and have been raised before domestic courts and the European Court of Human Rights. Examining the controversial and constantly evolving position of religion in the workplace, this collection brings together chapters by legal and social science scholars and provides a wealth of information on legal responses across Europe, Turkey and the United States to conflicts between professional and religious obligations involving employees and employers. Contemporary Jewish identity, integration and acculturation in Europe has become an urgent topic in view of the current wave of antisemitism and reliable research on the present state of Jewish identity is scarce. Lilach Lev Ari has chosen three ethnically diverse communities – Paris, Brussels, and Antwerp – that can shed a light on the identity and acculturation of the Jewish minority in Europe. To understand patterns of social integration of native-born and immigrant Jews in the three host societies she applies the correlational quantitative method and has conducted semi-structured interviews. The study can promote further understanding of Jewish continuity within the non-Jewish host societies in a situation, when there is a concern about the resilience and strength of the Jewish communities vis-à -vis new waves of antisemitism.

The war of 1948 in Palestine is a conflict whose history has been written primarily from the national point of view. This book asks what happens when narratives of war arise out of personal stories of those who were involved, stories that are still unfolding. Efrat Ben-Ze'ev examines the memories of those who participated and were affected by the events of 1948, and how these events have been mythologized over time. This is a three-way conversation between Palestinian villagers, Jewish-Israeli veterans, and British policemen who were stationed in Palestine on the eve of the war. Each has his or her story to tell. These small-scale truths shed new light on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, as it was then and as it has become.
