Sensors in Science and Technology
Sensors are used to measure physical, chemical and biological quantities. The book offers a comprehensive overview of physical principles, functions and applications of sensors. It is structured according to the fields of activity of sensors and shows their application by means of typical examples. Measured variables that can be recorded by sensors are e.g. mechanical, dynamic, thermal, electrical and magnetic. Furthermore, optical and acoustical sensors are discussed in detail in the book. The sensor signals are recorded, processed and converted into control signals for actuators. Such sensor systems are also presented.

Software-Engineering
Software-Engineering ist ein junges Gebiet der Informationswissenschaft. Es zeigt Methoden und Hilfsmittel auf, mit denen eine termingerechte, kostengünstige, rationell erzeugte und wartungsfreundliche Software mit hohem Qualitätsstandard hergestellt werden kann. Der Leser findet die Methoden, die einerseits besonders leistungsfähig und andererseits in der Praxis bewährt sind: Hierarchische Funktionsgliederung, Entscheidungstabelle nach DIN 66241, Programmablaufplan nach DIN 66001, Struktogramm nach DIN 66261 und Pseudocode, Datenstrukturen und Datenflussplan nach DIN 66001, SA und SADT, Jackson Strukturierte Programmierung, Petri-Netze. An Beispielen wird der Stoff anschaulich erläutert. Er kann durch Übungsaufgaben weiter vertieft werden. Die vorgestellten Methoden werden vergleichend beurteilt, ferner wird ein Überblick über rechnerunterstützte Software-Herstellung (Software-Tools) gegeben und es werden Probleme des Software-Projektmanagements besprochen.
Non-equilibrium Dynamics of Lipid Bilayers
The main goal of this thesis was to extend and apply time resolved x-ray scattering experiments at in-house, synchrotron and free electron laser sources to soft matter sample systems, in particular aligned lipid multilayers on solid support. A special emphasis was placed on a characterization of the non-equilibrium fast time response of the multilamellar stack to shortly pulsed optical excitation as well as the acousto-electric field accompanying a surface acoustic wave (SAW). In addition to fundamental questions associated with non-equilibrium dynamics of soft matter films such as driven membrane undulations, this thesis addresses technological challenges of time resolved x-ray diffraction, in particular concerning the timing scheme that has been implemented at the synchrotron storage ring Petra III, DESY, Hamburg. Importantly, a conceptually new pulse resolved x-ray detection scheme, well exceeding the performance of present detector concepts, has been developed and is described in detail.
