Bioethics and Racism
This volume aims to explore some of the practices, conflicts, negotiations and struggles at the interplay of bioethics and racism. This requires shedding light on the hegemonic power relationships that condemn some population groups to a condition of subjugation, suffering, and oppression. By unpacking notions that have been taken for granted and dismantling rhetorics that are veiled in discourses and rationales pertaining to race and racism, we highlight possible ways in which bioethics can operate across disciplinary boundaries and strengthen its connection with equity and social justice, which also entails striving for a "bioethics in action".

Setelah mengundurkan diri dari sekolah yang lama, Helena Grace melamar sebagai guru ke Global International School (GIS), sebuah institusi pendidikan yang mengadopsi kurikulum perlajaran dari Singapura. Di sekolah tempat berkumpulnya anak-anak pengusaha kaya kota Medan ini, Helena mendapat kenaikan gaji yang besar dan gengsi karena sebagian besar rekan gurunya berasal dari negara-negara Asia yang bertetangga dekat dengan Indonesia. Sama sekali tidak diduganya bahwa di GIS banyak hal yang melemahkan batin, terutama berkaitan dengan tingkah laku murid-murid di sana. Murid-murid GIS yang berusia remaja adalah individu -individu yang sangat provokatif. Mereka bertindak semaunya di dalam kelas: tidur, mengobrol, menolak tugas, menentang guru secara aktif maupun pasif-tapi mengharapkan nilai-nilainya tetap bagus. Bahkan tampaknya Kepala Sekolah menutup mata dan telinga terhadap keadaan yang tidak seimbang tersebut. Helena mengajar bidang studi bahasa Indonesia untuk anak kelas dua dan tiga SMU, sekaligus menjadi pembina kelas 2-2. Pada tahun ajaran sebelumnya, GIS kehilangan tiga guru bahasa Indonesia akibat konspirasi kolektif yang dikoordinasi oleh dua pelajar paling semau gue di GIS.

Apresentamos neste livro os resultados da investigação realizada entre 2010 e 2013 no Estado do Mato Grosso do Sul em relação ao processo em curso de dominação do capital agroindustrial canavieiro que tem atribuído em exploração marcante da mão de obra envolvida, a qual é constituída de trabalhadores migrantes, indígenas, somadas ainda às fileiras de trabalhadores locais, provindas dos municípios Sul-Mato-Grossenses. Trata-se de um processo marcante de avanço do capital no país direcionado para áreas de fronteira agrícola onde denota-se estreita aliança com Estado. Verificou-se a existência de interesses convergentes de latifundiários preocupados com a posse, legitimação e consequente garantia de lucro através da expansão da Cana-de-açúcar, do próprio empresariado nacional e estrangeiro, com ou sem tradição no setor agroindustrial canavieiro, endossados por seu turno pela ação concomitante de entidades de representação do agrohidronegócio. Logo, observou-se a estruturação de relações de poder que expressaram diretamente em mazelas no território.
