The Vices of Learning
In The Vices of Learning: Morality and Knowledge at Early Modern Universities, Sari Kivistö examines scholarly vices in the late Baroque and early Enlightenment periods. Moral criticism of the learned was a favourite theme of Latin dissertations, treatises and satires written in Germany ca. 1670–1730. Works on scholarly pride, logomachy, curiosity and other vices kept the presses running at German Protestant universities as well as farther north. Kivistö shows how scholars constructed fame and how the process involved various means of producing celebrity. The book industry, plagiarism and impressive titles were all labelled dishonest means of advancing a career. In The Vices of Learning Kivistö argues that scholarly ethics was an essential part of the early modern intellectual framework.
Critica
In answering questions such as what is 'modern' in literary criticism since the beginnings of the Early Modern age, this book does not follow the lines of René Wellek's famous History of Modern Criticism. It does not re-examine the history of literary theories and poetics. It rather focuses on the concepts and uses of what can be called 'practical criticism' (Buchkritik) and the historicity of its institutional and categorical frames of references. Viewing them as fundamental structures of literary production, reception and communication, this study traces the emergence of a temporalization of cultural processing, the periodical organization of a critical response as published in the new medium of the journal, and the development of different uses and functions of the literary canon. In analysis, two basic paradigms of criticism have to be confronted: the classical model of a critica perennis, as part of grammatica as an institution of learning, and the new conception and practice of critique mondaine, which emerges as an institution in its own right during the 16th and 17th centuries in Europe.
Das geistige Straßburg im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert
Im Heiligen Römischen Reich bildete Straßburg ein wichtiges wirtschaftliches und kulturelles Zentrum, mit der Reformation erlangte die Buchherstellung Bedeutung. Die Besetzung der Stadt durch Frankreich im Jahr 1681 drängte den Einfluss reformatorischen Gedankenguts zurück. Denn obwohl weiterhin Religionsfreiheit bestand, verfolgten die französischen Könige eine Rekatholisierungspolitik. Dennoch bestand die renommierte, 1621 gegründete, lutherisch geprägte Universität fort. Nach der Revolution von 1789 wurde die Stadt zu einem Ort des Exils für deutsche Republikaner und oppositionelle Intellektuelle. Vor diesem Hintergrund leistet der Band einen Beitrag zu der Erforschung des geistigen Lebens in Straßburg im Spannungsfeld deutscher und französischer Kultur.
