Morandi
Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964) built his visual lexicon from the most minimal of props--dust-covered bottles, bowls, vases, pitchers, tins and boxes. From it, he composed delicious permutations of quiet still lifes, in the most muted yet luminous of palettes, transforming the genre of still life into a cosmos. The composer Morton Feldman once wrote that in his own work he was "interested in getting to Time in its unstructured existence... How Time exists before we put our paws on it," and in this sense Morandi may be his counterpart in paint: his painted objects seem to possess a subtle self-sufficiency and interiority. Accompanying a recent exhibition at the Phillips Collection, Washington D.C., this beautifully designed catalogue contains a selection of reproductions buttressed with two essays by Morandi experts: Flavio Fergonzi appraises the myths that have attached to Morandi, the history of his critical reception and the cities with which the artist was particularly associated; Elisabetta Barisoni discusses Morandi's reception in America.
An American Painter in Venice
A biography of the American painter Ralph W. Curtis (1854-1922), of the Boston family who bought the Palazzo Barbaro on the Grand Canal in Venice in 1885. After graduating at Harvard, Curtis moved to Paris to study art with Carolus Duran, where he met his distant cousin John S. Sargent, with whom he travelled to Holland to see Franz Hals’s paintings. He exhibited at the Paris salons, at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, at the Venice Biennale in the 1880s. At Palazzo Barbaro he met Robert Browning, Henry James, but also Venetian painters such as Ettore Tito and Antonio Mancini. He travelled widely, even to Japan and India. His works are in American Museums and private collections.

Imagine Math 3
Imagine mathematics, imagine with the help of mathematics, imagine new worlds, new geometries, new forms. This volume in the series “Imagine Math” casts light on what is new and interesting in the relationships between mathematics, imagination and culture. The book opens by examining the connections between modern and contemporary art and mathematics, including Linda D. Henderson’s contribution. Several further papers are devoted to mathematical models and their influence on modern and contemporary art, including the work of Henry Moore and Hiroshi Sugimoto. Among the many other interesting contributions are an homage to Benoît Mandelbrot with reference to the exhibition held in New York in 2013 and the thoughts of Jean-Pierre Bourguignon on the art and math exhibition at the Fondation Cartier in Paris. An interesting part is dedicated to the connections between math, computer science and theatre with the papers by C. Bardainne and A. Mondot. The topics are treated in a way that is rigorous but captivating, detailed but very evocative. This is an all-embracing look at the world of mathematics and culture.

Barry X Ball. Medardo Rosso Project. Ediz. a Colori
Since 2013, Barry X Ball has been engaged in a 3D scanning project of the works of Medardo Rosso held in Italian public collections. He renders Rosso’s complex forms in minute detail, “reinvented, almost revisited” in various materials, from golden calcite to pink and white Iranian onyx, or highly transparent materials such as Mexican white onyx. The results are striking three-dimensional pieces that mirror Rosso’s sculptures. The charge of energy and mystery that the brilliant Italian artist embodied in his creations remains intact and is coupled with a contemporary vision that examines the potential and limits of forms and materials. The result is a virtuoso dialogue with Rosso’s works and with the masterpieces of sculpture in the Venetian museum’s permanent collection.
