Gegenstand der Studie ist die Analyse der Sonderbeziehung Thomas Manns zu Italien auf der Basis der Briefe, Tagebücher und Essays, sowie der zahlreichen Neufunde, die durch die Autorin in verschiedenen Archiven, vor allem in jenen der Verlagshäuser Einaudi und Mondadori, der Accademia dei Lincei, der Schriftsteller Ignazio Silone und G.A. Borgese, erschlossen worden sind. Das daraus entstehende Italienerlebnis Thomas Manns ist positiv gefärbt. Besondere Akzentuierung erfährt die Darstellung der persönlichen Kontakte Thomas Manns zu italienischen Intellektuellen, insbesondere durch die gemeinsame Erfahrung des Faschismus und des Nationalsozialismus. Die Übereinstimmung Thomas Manns mit Repräsentanten eines intellektuellen Italiens bezeugt eine geistige Haltung, die ihre Kraft aus einer an der Antike orientierten europäischen Tradition bezieht; eine politisch-geistige Auseinandersetzung, die sich vom tradierten ästhetisierenden Italienbild entfernt.
