The Iron Stair is a romance novel by Eliza Humphreys. Humphreys was an English novelist who often used the pen-name 'Rita'. Excerpt: "Towards morning he had a strange dream. He seemed to be standing amidst bleak grey moorland, stretching either side of bare heights, under a grey sky. Huge blocks of quartz and granite lay scattered around as if thrown up by some fierce explosion, or some under-world force. And as he stood, and looked around, he saw a chain of human beings moving in linked apathy towards the blocks. They commenced to hew at them with queer pointed axes. He seemed to hear the monotonous blows, to watch the rise and fall of the various arms."

Desmond Humphreys, 1850-1938 (she was not born in 1860, as is incorrectly stated by several sources), was known to her public as "Rita". Like many authors, Rita went out of fashion in the 1930s, and has since been unfairly neglected. A Man of No Importance.
I first became acquainted with the novels of "Rita" some years ago, when I discovered that two of my ancestors were used by her, as models for characters in one of her books. That book was A Man of No Importance - first published in 1907. Within this novel, Charles and Eliza Skerrett of Droitwich, Worcs (Eliza being my great great grandmother) become Mr and Mrs Chance of Salwych. Rita met Charles and Eliza by chance, whilst receiving treatment for rheumatism, at the Royal Brine Baths, Droitwich; where both Charles and Eliza worked. The Sinner
The story opens in a London hospital, where Nellie Nugent, a young Irishwoman, is starting her novitiate as a nurse. Her first patient is a young man whom she cares for until he recovers under the supervision of nurse Deborah Gray, her friend. This is a fascinating love story with a dramatic thread and a sensational and exciting plot. Detective Chief Inspector Pointer is in trouble. Specifically, he has a dead body and two women who claim him as their husband. Pointer is left to wonder about the identity of the dead man and how he came to be lying in a beach hut with his head smashed in. His investigations take him to the sun-drenched fields of southern France and to deal with another, more sensational, murder case long thought to be solved.
