Waiting for the Sunrise

This is a personal account of an interracial familys struggle against pervasive racism in the U.S. and the horrors of the civil war that plagued Rwanda in 1994. Raised in the American Midwest, author Elizabeth Gatorano, who is White, had no idea of the trials she would face after marrying Phanuel, who is Black and an immigrant to the U.S. from Rwanda. Prejudice against their marriage followed them and their children wherever they went, often making them the focus of racist discrimination and threats of violence at home and at work. Throughout these ordeals, Liz and Phanuel responded to hostility with love and patience, their faith in each other and in God remaining unshakable, even in the darkest hours. Together, they overcame all obstacles in their path, and they continue to help those in need today.

From a Gnat to an Eagle

A compelling account of a remarkable man and an illuminating portrait of how a person can be transformed through the power of love, dedication, and perseverance in the path of personal spiritual development. The child of Jewish immigrants in the Bronx, Nathan Rutstein was raised in a home devoid of books and ran the streets with gangs as a youth. When he was admitted to college on a sports scholarship, he seemed headed for a career in baseball, but the pursuit of justiceparticularly racial equalitymotivated him to apply himself to his studies and aim for something nobler. He emerged from his youth with a deep thirst for personal spiritual growth rooted in the teachings of the Bah Faith. Though nothing in his upbringing encouraged him to pursue the life of the mind, eventually he became an author, a teacher, and a tireless advocate for racial equality, which became the dominating passion of his life.

Biosensing Technologies for the Detection of Pathogens

Rapid multiplex detection of pathogens in the environment and in our food is a key factor for the prevention and effective treatment of infectious diseases. They allow rapid detection of single molecules as well as cellular substances. This book, including 12 chapters from 50 authors, introduces the principles of identification of specific pathogen biomarkers along with different biosensor-based technologies applied for pathogen detection.

Black Rebellion

"Who will tell the stories of those who refused to be slaves? The Atlantic slave trade transported millions of humans from the coasts of West Africa into the New World, stripping them of their dignity, freedom, language and culture. The accepted notion is that these Blacks willingly submitted to the chattel slave system, accepting their new lot in life. When one scours the records, a different story emerges. Black Rebellion chronicles the active resistance of Africans in the New World against their oppressors. These firsthand accounts reveal much that has been neglected in the traditional telling of history. Black Rebellion is a collection of historical literature documenting major slave rev...

The landmark exposé of the most powerful and secretive vice president in American history Barton Gellman shared the Pulitzer Prize in 2008 for a keen-edged reckoning with Dick Cheney's domestic agenda in The Washington Post. In Angler, Gellman goes far beyond that series to take on the full scope of Cheney's work and its consequences, including his hidden role in the Bush administration's most fateful choices in war: shifting focus from al Qaeda to Iraq, unleashing the National Security Agency to spy at home, and promoting cruel and inhumane methods of interrogation. Packed with fresh insights and untold stories, Gellman parts the curtains of secrecy to show how the vice president operated and what he wrought. An inspiration for the film Vice, starring Christian Bale, Amy Adams, and Steve Carrell.
