The boy's face, uplifted to his sister's, was full of the happy enthusiasm which feels itself secure of sympathy; and Frances's heart beat high with pleasure because her welcome home was of this joyful sort. For the absent school-girl, like her brother, had known some fears--lest the six months' parting should have taught Austin to do without her. The boy had proved a poor correspondent; and it was not easy for Frances with her warm, unselfish temperament, to realize that unanswered letters did not necessarily signify failing affection. ... Ellinor Davenport Adams had her birth registered in the fourth quarter of 1856. She was the third surviving child, and second surviving daughter of William Henry Davenport Adams (5 May 1828 - 30 December 1991), a journalist and author, and Sarah Esther Morgan (13 August 1835-1908), the daughter of shoemaker Timothy Morgan. The couple had married at St. Mary's Church in the Parish of Paddington, London on 26 December 1850.

Altruistic young Frances Morland founds a society amongst her friends, intended to promote doing good to others. But her ideals are challenged when a most unexpected half-brother appears on the scene. Ellinor Lily Davenport Adams (1858-1913) - sometimes credited as E. Davenport Adams, or E.D. Adams - was a late-nineteenth, early twentieth-century British author, who penned approximately twenty children's books. Many of her stories were aimed at girls, and straddled the line between the Victorian morality tale and the sweeter, more light-hearted fare that followed.

The Selected Works of George Alfred Henty

You may be told perhaps that there is no good to be obtained from tales of fighting and bloodshed—that there is no moral to be drawn from such histories. Believe it not. War has its lessons as well as Peace. You will learn from tales like this that determination and enthusiasm can accomplish marvels, that true courage is generally accompanied by magnanimity and gentleness, and that if not in itself the very highest of virtues, it is the parent of almost all the others, since but few of them can be practiced without it. The courage of our forefathers has created the greatest empire in the world around a small and in itself insignificant island; if this empire is ever lost, it will be by the...
