This book focuses on the phenomenon of art intervention—an expression of local initiatives by artists, collectives, and art centers wishing to influence the design of the space or make a change in its lifestyle. Architecture and the Public Good
Why has explaining the value of the architecture profession proven so difficult? The architecture profession can be well-defended by demonstrating the public good which results from its protected practice. Although the book believes in this approach, this approach immediately raises the thorny questions of just who is the public, and what is its good? To answer these questions, to explain why the profession has done a poor job explaining itself, and to propose a fresh perspective are the challenges set out in this book. The book dissects the internal weaknesses and external forces which have prevented architects from asserting their value to the public, explains how the concept of the public is itself widely misunderstood, investigates the shifting boundaries of the public and private realms, and proposes a series of measures by which we can assess and improve an architectural work’s publicness. Through a renewed focus on the public good that everyday architects are capable of as a profession, the book charts an ultimately optimistic program for the architecture profession’s renewal.
Motherland
Parangolé ist ein jährlich erscheinendes, unabhängiges Magazin, das Ideen zu Urbanisierung, Design und Architektur erforscht und einen globalen Dialog über Themen wie Mobilität, Migration, Fluidität und Vielfältigkeit initiiert. Das Magazin beschäftigt sich mit der kulturellen, sozialen und politischen Bedeutung dessen, was es bedeutet, in der Stadt zu leben. Der Titel ist eine Hommage an das Werk des brasilianischen Künstlers Hélio Oiticica und erweitert dessen zentralen Grundsatz »Leben ist Bewegung« vom Körper auf die Stadt. Die erste Ausgabe von Parangolé mit dem Titel Motherland befasst sich mit dem Lebensraum derjenigen, die aufgrund von wirtschaftlicher Not, Konflikten und Gewalt in prekären und unbeständigen Verhältnissen leben. Menschen, die auf der Flucht – also »in Bewegung« – sind, stehen vor großen Herausforderungen und sind besonders verwundbar. Diese Tatsachen müssen bei der Stadtplanung entsprechend berücksichtigt werden. In Motherland werden Theorie und Praxis zusammengebracht, um über diese Fragen und ihre Lösungen nachzudenken.
Clip, Stamp, Fold
An explosion of little architectural magazines in the 1960s and 1970s instigated a radical transformation in architectural culture, as the magazines acted as a site of innovation and debate. Clip/Stamp/Fold takes stock of seventy little magazines from this period. The book brings together a remarkable range of documents and original research which the project has produced during its continuous travels over the last four years starting with the exhibition at the Storefront in November 2006. The book features transcripts from the “Small Talks” events in which editors and designers were invited to discuss their magazines; a stocktaking of over 100 significant issues that tracks the changing density and progression of the little magazine phenomenon; transcripts of more than forty interviews with magazine editors and designers from all over the world; a selection of magazine facsimiles; and a fold out poster that offers a mosaic image of more than 1,200 covers examined during the research.

"Caracas Litoral, Venezuela looks at the challenges, obstacles, and opportunities facing the reconstruction of coastal communities near Caracas, after mudslides devastated these areas in December 1999. Already in the midst of informal land development, affluent weekend residents from Caracas had awkwardly occupied this dramatic and precarious strip of coastland between the Gulf of Mexico and the Avila Mountain--"also shared with the national airport and second largest seaport.
