Guide to Petroleum Engineering Career By: Engr. Azunna I. B. Ekejiuba (Ph.D.) Historically, human beings have used petroleum in one form or another since ancient times (more than 8000 years ago). However, the birth of the modern petroleum industry was on August 27, 1859, when Colonel Edwin L. Drake used the then popular cable tool (also called churn or percussion) drilling method to drill the actual historically first oil well, on a stream called Oil Greek, near Titusville, Pennsylvania, at a depth of 69 feet, six inches (21 metres). In recent years, the advent of the transcontinental transmission lines and petrochemical industries has increased the value of natural gas (methane) to a fuel i...

This volume analyzes and summarizes recent developments in several key interfacial electrochemical systems in the areas of fuel cell electrocatatalysis, electrosynthesis and electrodeposition. The six Chapters are written by internationally recognized experts in these areas and address both fundamental and practical aspects of several existing or emerging key electrochemical technologies. The Chapter by R. Adzic, N. Marinkovic and M. Vukmirovic provides a lucid and authoritative treatment of the electrochemistry and electrocatalysis of Ruthenium, a key element for the devel- ment of efficient electrodes for polymer electrolyte (PEM) fuel cells. Starting from fundamental surface science studi...
This book derives from a workshop held in Sweden to examine the environmental implications of the dramatic increase in carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere in the last 50 years and to find ways of mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. This multi-disciplinary approach makes it essential reading not only for chemists but for all engineers, biologists and environmentalists concerned with this crucially important issue.
This work details the technical, environmental and business aspects of current methanol production processes and presents recent developments concerning the use of methanol in transportation fuel and in agriculture. It is written by internationally renowned methanol experts from academia and industry.
Fossil fuels still need to meet the growing demand of global economic development, yet they are often considered as one of the main sources of the CO2 release in the atmosphere. CO2, which is the primary greenhouse gas (GHG), is periodically exchanged among the land surface, ocean, and atmosphere where various creatures absorb and produce it daily. However, the balanced processes of producing and consuming the CO2 by nature are unfortunately faced by the anthropogenic release of CO2. Decreasing the emissions of these greenhouse gases is becoming more urgent. Therefore, carbon sequestration and storage (CSS) of CO2, its utilization in oil recovery, as well as its conversion into fuels and chemicals emerge as active options and potential strategies to mitigate CO2 emissions and climate change, energy crises, and challenges in the storage of energy.
Summarising recent achievements in surface-functionalised cells - including fabrication, characterisation, applications and nanotoxicity - the chapters in this book cover a range of different systems for altering and enhancing the functionalities of cells using different functional nanomaterials such as polymer nanofilms, nanoparticles, nanocoated cells and artificial spores. The book provides an interdisciplinary approach to the topic with authors from both biological and chemical backgrounds.
Unique in providing an overview of the subject on the scientific level, this book presents the current state of the art with regard to different aspects of sustainable energy production and its efficient storage. The broad scope ranges from nanomaterials for energy production, via fuel cells and nanostructured materials for fuel production, right up to supercapacitors and climate change. Edited by a rising star within the community, this is an invaluable work on a hot topic for materials scientists, solid state, surface and physical chemists, as well as those chemists working in industry and chemical engineers.
