Nitrogen Metabolism in Crops and Model Plant Species

Nitrogen (N) is an important macronutrient for plant growth and development. Research has long been carried out to elucidate plant mechanisms related to N metabolism, important for productivity under stress and non-stress conditions. Despite recent advances, many of these mechanisms are not yet fully understood. In this Research Topic, we hope to present several research studies related to genetic, biochemical, and physiological aspects important for N uptake, assimilation, and utilization in crops and model plant species. Together, the articles in this issue will provide an integrated perspective on important questions related to N physiology, metabolism, and growth in plant organs, highlighting the fundamental importance of diverse plant traits under a climate change scenario.

Abiotic Stress Adaptation and Tolerance Mechanisms in Crop Plants

Agricultural communities are being affected by climate change. Droughts, heat waves, cold snaps, and flooding are all regarded as severe threats to crop production as they hinder plant growth and development, resulting in yield losses. Plants respond to stress through a complex process that includes changes in physiological and biochemical processes, gene expression, and alterations in the amounts of metabolites and proteins at different developmental stages. This special issue will focus on recent advances in the use of various traditional and modern biotechnological strategies to understand stress adaptation and tolerance mechanisms including (but not limited to) genomics, transcriptomics,...

Morphological Plant Modeling: Unleashing Geometric and Topological Potential within the Plant Sciences

An increasing population faces the growing demand for agricultural products and accurate global climate models that account for individual plant morphologies to predict favorable human habitat. Both demands are rooted in an improved understanding of the mechanistic origins of plant development. Such understanding requires geometric and topological descriptors to characterize the phenotype of plants and its link to genotypes. However, the current plant phenotyping framework relies on simple length and diameter measurements, which fail to capture the exquisite architecture of plants. The Research Topic “Morphological Plant Modeling: Unleashing Geometric and Topological Potential within the P...

The Europeanization of National Foreign Policies Towards Latin America

Who shapes the European Union's policy towards Latin America? How has this EU policy modified individual member states' relations with the region? This book provides a comparative account of seven member states' bilateral links with Latin America since 1945, in the context of their EU membership and based on the concept of 'Europeanization'. It illustrates how and why the main architects of this EU policy have been Spain and Germany. In contrast, Poland, Sweden and Ireland, which had little previous interaction with Latin America, have developed their current relations with that region virtually as a result of their EU membership. The United Kingdom and France lie in the middle: they have been influential in certain policy-areas and key periods in history, while they have adapted to what is done at the EU level in others. Practitioners, established academic experts as well emerging scholars in the field bring to be bear a novel combination of pioneering research and cutting edge conceptual analysis on this important but neglected area of the EU's foreign relations.

Dry areas suffer not only from limited rainfall but alsonatural leakage'-90% of rainwater is lost directly or indirectly, and is unavailable for agriculture or domestic use. Water harvesting is a low-cost, easy-to-use, environmentally-friendly way to recover a large part of this lost water. How does water harvesting work? Which sites or areas are

Enrique Lihn

The Semiotic Sphere

Although semiotics has, in one guise or another, ftourished uninterruptedly since pre Socratic times in the West, and important semiotic themes have emerged and devel oped independently in both the Brahmanie and Buddhistic traditions, semiotics as an organized undertaking began to 100m only in the 1960s. Workshops materialized, with a perhaps surprising spontaneity, over much ofEurope-Eastern and Western and in North America. Thereafter, others quickly surfaced almost everywhere over the litera te globe. Different places strategically allied themselves with different lega eies, but all had a common thrust: to aim at a general theory of signs, by way of a description of different sign systems...
