Os conceitos de "novo" e "tradicional", muito usados nas décadas de 1970 e 1980, estabeleceram uma oposição de padrões de saberes pedagógicos. Esta obra acompanha as discussões sobre esse conflito de visões em três revistas de circulação nacional especializadas em Educação: Cadernos de Pesquisa, Educação e Sociedade e Revista da Ande, órgãos divulgadores das idéias e pesquisas desenvolvidas, respectivamente, na Fundação Carlos Chagas, na Unicamp e na PUC-SP.
