The Institute
The Institute of Inspectors of Schools of New South Wales was established on 14 January 1914. It incorporated the traditions of the “inspectorial system” developed by William Wilkins, the first permanent district superintendent and inspector of schools appointed by the National Board of Education on 1 July 1854. Although the inspectorate was abolished on 1 April 1990, the Institute of Senior Educational Administrators continued to provide industrial coverage for chief education officers and to serve as their professional association. This history is a sociological and political examination of an organizational entity and the power it exerted in NSW public education over the last 100 years.
Complex Geometry and Dynamics
This book focuses on complex geometry and covers highly active topics centered around geometric problems in several complex variables and complex dynamics, written by some of the world’s leading experts in their respective fields. This book features research and expository contributions from the 2013 Abel Symposium, held at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology Trondheim on July 2-5, 2013. The purpose of the symposium was to present the state of the art on the topics, and to discuss future research directions.
The Cremona Group and Its Subgroups
The goal of this book is to present a portrait of the n n-dimensional Cremona group with an emphasis on the 2-dimensional case. After recalling some crucial tools, the book describes a naturally defined infinite dimensional hyperbolic space on which the Cremona group acts. This space plays a fundamental role in the study of Cremona groups, as it allows one to apply tools from geometric group theory to explore properties of the subgroups of the Cremona group as well as the degree growth and dynamical behavior of birational transformations. The book describes natural topologies on the Cremona group, codifies the notion of algebraic subgroups of the Cremona groups and finishes with a chapter on the dynamics of their actions. This book is aimed at graduate students and researchers in algebraic geometry who are interested in birational geometry and its interactions with geometric group theory and dynamical systems.
Complex Analysis I
The past several years have witnessed a striking number of important developments in Complex Analysis. One of the characteristics of these developments has been to bridge the gap existing between the theory of functions of one and of several complex variables. The Special Year in Complex Analysis at the University of Maryland, and these proceedings, were conceived as a forum where these new developments could be presented and where specialists in different areas of complex analysis could exchange ideas. These proceedings contain both surveys of different subjects covered during the year as well as many new results and insights. The manuscripts are accessible not only to specialists but to a broader audience. Among the subjects touched upon are Nevanlinna theory in one and several variables, interpolation problems in Cn, estimations and integral representations of the solutions of the Cauchy-Riemann equations, the complex Monge-Ampère equation, geometric problems in complex analysis in Cn, applications of complex analysis to harmonic analysis, partial differential equations.
Complex Dynamics
Chaotic behavior of (even the simplest) iterations of polynomial maps of the complex plane was known for almost one hundred years due to the pioneering work of Farou, Julia, and their contemporaries. However, it was only twenty-five years ago that the first computer generated images illustrating properties of iterations of quadratic maps appeared. These images of the so-called Mandelbrot and Julia sets immediately resulted in a strong resurgence of interest in complex dynamics. The present volume, based on the talks at the conference commemorating the twenty-fifth anniversary of the appearance of Mandelbrot sets, provides a panorama of current research in this truly fascinating area of mathematics.
Demolishing Whitehall

The Other Australia
This book traces the patterns and impact of immigration to Australia since 1945, focusing on immigrants from non-English-speaking backgrounds who came to New South Wales. Australia has been diversified by the range of immigrants who have come to its shores, a diversification that has been welcomed by some and vehemently opposed by others. The book describes the personal experience of many newcomers to Australia, who came as displaced persons, refugees, on business migration programs or independently. Their testaments show that while some were invited and encouraged to share in the Australian experiment, others have been treated as intruders.

Complex Analysis and Geometry
This meeting has been motivated by two events: the 85th birthday of Pierre Lelong, and the end of the third year of the European network "Complex analysis and analytic geometry" from the programme Human Capital and Mobility. For the first event, Mathematicians from Poland, Sweden, United States and France, whose work is particularly related to the one ofP. Lelong have accepted to participate; for the second, the different teams of the Network sent lecturers to report on their most recent works. Motives
Motives were introduced in the mid-1960s by Grothendieck to explain the analogies among the various cohomology theories for algebraic varieties, to play the role of the missing rational cohomology, and to provide a blueprint for proving Weil's conjectures about the zeta function of a variety over a finite field. Over the last ten years or so, researchers in various areas--Hodge theory, algebraic $K$-theory, polylogarithms, automorphic forms, $L$-functions, $ell$-adic representations, trigonometric sums, and algebraic cycles--have discovered that an enlarged (and in part conjectural) theory of ``mixed'' motives indicates and explains phenomena appearing in each area. Thus the theory holds the potential of enriching and unifying these areas. These two volumes contain the revised texts of nearly all the lectures presented at the AMS-IMS-SIAM Joint Summer Research Conference on Motives, held in Seattle, in 1991. A number of related works are also included, making for a total of forty-seven papers, from general introductions to specialized surveys to research papers.
