Experimental Preservation
Old things, historic things, smelly dirty things, all the things that were considered the very opposite of 'contemporary, ' have suddenly irrupted forcefully into architecture and art, blurring their boundaries. This book takes stock of the emerging generation behind this turn, and examines their experimental engagements with the preservation of culturally charged objects. Structured around a series of interdisciplinary dialogues among practitioners and thinkers, and illustrated with recent projects, the book provides a window into the unfolding intellectual frameworks, aesthetic modes, cultural ambitions, and political commitments that are the basis of experimental preservation.
Concrete Oslo
Concrete Oslo gives the reader an opportunity to explore a great number of buildings, structures and objects through curated tours across the city. But more than mere tourist guide, this book is an opportunity to reflect upon an enigmatic building tradition and to engage with the city, in literal and physical ways. Sverre Fehn, Nordic Pavilion Venice
A gem of midcentury architecture examined with previously unpublished archival material Sverre Fehn's Nordic Pavilion in Venice is a masterpiece of postwar architecture. The young Norwegian architect won the competition in 1958; the building was inaugurated in 1962. In minute detail, this book presents the history of the origins and making of the Nordic pavilion, covering everything from the geopolitical context in an increasingly tense cold-war atmosphere to the aggregates in the concrete of the audacious roof construction. Sverre Fehn, Nordic Pavilion, Venice also documents the vast cast involved in the making of the Nordic Pavilion, from kings, prime ministers, bureaucrats, ambassadors, museum directors, architects and a myriad of artists' associations to Venetian dignitaries, engineers, gardeners, lawyers and plumbers. Hamsun, Holl, Hamarøy
Steven Holl has set up a documentation centre for the Norwegian author Knut Hamsun (1859 -1952) on Hamarøy, in northern Norway. This unconventional building reflects the author's no less unusual personality. The centre in the barren landscape of Hamarøy, where Hamsun lived and worked, the silence and solitude, challenge visitors to involve themselves with him and his work. The book records the connection between Hamsun, the architecture and the landscape. Photographer Iwan Baan relates the landscape and the building to each other, and historical documents illustrate Hamsun's contradictory life and influential work, et al. the novel Hunger (1890), with which Hamsun achieved his fame. Place and Displacement
Seemingly immobile and durable, architecture remains a challenge in the modern world of collecting and exhibiting. From the late eighteenth century onward, divergent conventions of display have been conflated with urgent discussions of how material culture is handed down, distributed, appropriated, and evaluated. Place and Displacement: Exhibiting Architecture investigates historical and con temporary practices of displaying architecture, whether in full scale or as fragments, models, or two-dimensional representations. Exploring questions of circulation and temporality, issues of institution and canon, and the discourse and politics of architectural spaces on exhibit, the book's essays discuss the ambiguous status of architecture as an object of display. Contributions from leading scholars in the new research field of architectural exhibitions reveal the centrality of the exhibition in defining and redefining the notion of architecture and its history.
