Aard van het beestje

Dat kun je eigenlijk pas echt goed beschrijven na zorgvuldige beschouwing van het dier in zijn eigen habitat. Tien seizoenen reisde Caspar Janssen naar bos, heide, akker, berm, weiland, beek, rivier, kust, duin, moeras en zijn eigen Amsterdamse balkon, en observeerde honderd verrassende, geliefde, maar ook onbekend-onbeminde beestjes in hun leefomgeving. Het levert in dit boek niet alleen een fascinerende schatkist aan krioelende, vliegende, dribbelende en zoemende portretjes op, schitterend geïllustreerd door Margot Holtman, maar ook een groter verhaal over de staat van en onze omgang met het Nederlandse landschap.
De houtsnip
Het 24e deel in de succesvolle vogelserie van Atlas Contact, het leven van een prachtige bosvogel met een kenmerkend lange, rechte snavel: De houtsnip De houtsnip is perfect gecamoufleerd, waardoor hij nauwelijks opvalt tussen de afgevallen bladeren op de grond. Bij gevaar rekent de vogel tot het laatst toe op zijn camouflagekleuren en drukt zich op de grond. Pas als je, als achteloze wandelaar, bijna op ’m stapt vliegt hij op, de wandelaar ondertussen een hartverzakking bezorgend. De houtsnip is een wat plompe vogel, ongeveer zo groot als een duif, met een kenmerkend lange, rechte snavel, waarmee hij diep de grond in komt om regenwormen te vangen. Verder valt deze bosvogel op door zijn relatief korte poten en grote ogen. Aan dit laatste kun je zien dat het eigenlijk een nachtdier is. De houtsnip is beroemd vanwege zijn baltsvluchten waarbij hij knorrend en niesend zigzaggend tussen en over de bomen vliegt. Omdat houtsnippen slecht recht voor zich uit kunnen zien, knallen ze tijdens de najaarstrek nogal eens tegen ramen en muren op; houtsnippen zijn daarom helaas ook geziene gasten in vogelhospitalen. De houtsnip is het 24e deel in de succesvolle Vogelserie van Atlas Contact.
Resource Ecology
