Democracy in the South is the first international collaboration that draws attention to the complex problems of democratic consolidation across the majority world. Nine case studies, three each from Africa, Latin America and Asia, shed light on the contemporary challenges faced by democratizing countries, mostly from the perspective of emerging theorists working in their home countries.--Publisher's description.

The Politics of Neoliberal Democracy in Africa

Since the late 1980s the changing dynamic of global development has driven the tide of democratic expansion in the developing world. In Africa, western donors have sought to impose 'neo-liberal' visions of socio-economic and political institution-building, spreading political reforms and economic liberalisation with far-reaching consequences. Associated with external interventions, but also sometimes conflicting with them, are internal protests against authoritarianism, which have problematically reinforced and/or undermined the donor agenda for democratic reform. Here, Usman Tar questions the assumption that Africa was lacking the essential components for a spontaneous transition to democracy. He explores the dynamic, but contradictory, links between external and internal dimensions of neo-liberal democratic expansion in Africa, focusing on Nigeria. Tar dissects the struggles for democracy, and for democratic policy and practice in a country with rich economic potential but a troubled political dispensation.

This book examines how modern Nigerian political institutions have grappled with the resurgence of traditional institutions of political leadership in the post-colonial era. The contributors examine the role and nature of traditional governance institutions in West Africa from pre-colonial times to the post-colonial era. Part I considers a range of traditional institutions including monarchies, Islamic institutions and the role of culture and arts such as masking and music in traditional leadership. Part II focuses on modern governance institutions, elites, political action, arts, and democracy in post-colonial Nigeria. Part III examines democratic institutions and processes in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, covering issues such as electoral reforms, women’s political participation, and democratic citizenship. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of African politics, governance, and democratization.

A 40-year-old institution has come of age. There is the need to document the history, processes and outputs of the institution. This work is a short documentary on Archdeacon Dennis Junior Seminary (ADJS) Mbieri. There are also sections on spirituality, leadership, and entrepreneurship. We added a short biography of the Most Reverend Benjamin Nwankiti (founder of the Seminary) and Archdeacon T J Dennis (after whom the school was named). The contributions of the authors, who made their presentation with a lot of expertise is gratefully acknowledged. ...

A class of disenchanted Nigerian politicians vowed to make the country ungovernable for the incumbent if he got voted in. Close by is the Islamist Boko Haram with links to the al Qaeda. The Boko Haram, having lost its founder in questionable circumstances following confrontation with security forces, is sworn to Islamise the country and obliterate all Western influences. From the succeeding wave of suicide bombings and related acts of violence aimed at spreading terror, there is growing suspicion of a working accord between the two. This angle with relevant data the present work explores intensely. But beyond the bomb blasts is an undercurrent of intrigues, the different ethnic nationalities scheming to make the best of the situation, even as the subversive activities of the Boko Haram continue to threaten the corporate existence of the country.

Challenging the State in Africa

This thesis examines the 'Igbo Question' and emergent forms of Igbo 'self-determination' in contemporary Nigeria. It does this within the context of contested citizenship, ethnic identity politics and the unresolved crisis of state ownership and legitimacy, which all feeds into the 'National Question' in the Nigerian public space. The thesis proceeds from a theoretical standpoint that places the 'Igbo Question' within the framework of the 'tri-polar' power struggle and competition among the three major ethnic groups in Nigeria. Based on a prior idea of statehood which is rooted in the aborted secessionist attempts of the Igbo ethnic group from the Nigerian state between 1967 and 1970, and dr...
