Euan Macdonald's IN THE SHADOW'S PATH explores big ideas - time, speed, distance - by looking closely at little things: a tennis ball that keeps bouncing for eternity, or a plane that piggybacks another through the sky. Los Angeles Times critic Christopher Knight wrote that 'Macdonald makes estrangement from the ordinary into a potent method for heightened perception'.The works reminds viewers how strange and beguiling ordinary things can be when observed with enough patience and good humour. This catalogue reflects McDonald's 2002 visiting artist's residency and subsequent exhibition IN THE SHADOW'S PATH at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery. Gatefold, full colour with an essay by Justin Paton.

The multitalented Euan Macdonald comes from all over: he was born in Edinburgh in 1965, moved to Canada with his family as a kid, then headed still further west to settle in Los Angeles as an adult. everythinghappensatonce brings together his video works, drawings and paintings influenced by all those places--its title is also the subtitle of his 1999 video Home, whose ironic, distanced approach is characteristic of the production strategies he has been employing for years. His videos find him an eyewitness to the unconscious and the casual. His drawings, despite tie-ins to the motifs and themes of his videos, preserve their autonomy as significant works of their own.

International Law and Ethics After the Critical Challenge

  • Categories: Law

Recasting the critical challenge to international law in positive terms, this book examines what is left of international law if we accept both that apolitical rules are impossible and that the values used to justify them are irreducibly, radically subjective.
