This volume contains the Proceedings of the International Workshop Variational Methods For Discontinuous Structures, which was jointly organized by the Dipar timento di Matematica Francesco Brioschi of Milano Politecnico and the Interna tional School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) of Trieste. The Conference took place at Villa Erba Antica (Cernobbio) on the Lago di Como on July 4- 6, 2001. In past years the calculus of variations faced mainly the study of continuous structures, say particularly problems with smooth solutions. One of the deepest and more delicate problems was the regularity of weak solutions. More recently, new sophisticated tools have been introduced in order to study disconti...

Dynamic Control and Optimization

This book contains the revised selected papers of the International Conference on Dynamic Monitoring and Optimization, DCO 2021, held in Aveiro, Portugal, February 3-5, 2021. The papers present achievements in the most challenging areas of dynamic control, optimization and related topics, including recent results in nonlinear dynamic control systems, calculus of variations, sub-Riemannian geometry, conventional differential equations, control of PDE evolution, stochastic differential equations, the spread of acoustic waves in elastic media, dynamics in space-time, Nondegenerate abnormality, controllability, and the infimum gap phenomena in optimization and optimal control with state constraints.

Noncommutative Geometry and Optimal Transport

The distance formula in noncommutative geometry was introduced by Connes at the end of the 1980s. It is a generalization of Riemannian geodesic distance that makes sense in a noncommutative setting, and provides an original tool to study the geometry of the space of states on an algebra. It also has an intriguing echo in physics, for it yields a metric interpretation for the Higgs field. In the 1990s, Rieffel noticed that this distance is a noncommutative version of the Wasserstein distance of order 1 in the theory of optimal transport. More exactly, this is a noncommutative generalization of Kantorovich dual formula of the Wasserstein distance. Connes distance thus offers an unexpected conn...

6th World Congress of Biomechanics (WCB 2010), 1 - 6 August 2010, Singapore

Biomechanics covers a wide field such as organ mechanics, tissue mechanics, cell mechanics to molecular mechanics. At the 6th World Congress of Biomechanics WCB 2010 in Singapore, authors presented the largest experimental studies, technologies and equipment. Special emphasis was placed on state-of-the-art technology and medical applications. This volume presents the Proceedings of the 6th WCB 2010 which was hold in conjunction with 14th International Conference on Biomedical Engineering (ICBME) & 5th Asia Pacific Conference on Biomechanics (APBiomech). The peer reviewed scientific papers are arranged in the six themes Organ Mechanics, Tissue Mechanics, Cell Mechanics, Molecular Mechanics, Materials, Tools, Devices & Techniques, Special Topics.
