Advances in Condensed Matter and Materials Research

Nine articles written especially for the series synthesize international research in condensed matter. Among the topics are fiber debonding and bridging toughening in fiber-reinforced brittle matrix composites, analyzing the electron transport phenomena in high- temperature superconductivity materials by studying the band spectrum and its transformation under doping by different impurities, a functional integral approach in superconductivity theory, dye molecules in zeolite L nano crystals for efficient light harvesting, luminescent properties of some substituted 1,8 naphthyridines, and the discrete dependence of powder steels properties on porosity. No information is provided about future volumes. c. Book News Inc.

New Topics in Nanotechnology Research

Nanotechnology is a 'catch-all' description of activities at the level of atoms and molecules that have applications in the real world. A manometer is a billionth of a meter, about 1/80,000 of the diameter of a human hair, or 10 times the diameter of a hydrogen atom. Nanotechnology is now used in precision engineering, new materials development as well as in electronics; electromechanical systems as well as mainstream biomedical applications in areas such as gene therapy, drug delivery and novel drug discovery techniques. This book presents the latest research in this frontier field.

Nanorods and Nanocomposites

The book, Nanorods and Nanocomposites aims to provide the reader with an overview of the recent advances made on the synthesis of nanorods and nanocomposites and their emerging applications for a better lifestyle. The nanorods are a surprising gift to materials science from the research field of nanoscale materials. Nanorods promise to serve as a building block of the next-generation electronic and optoelectronic devices. Nanocomposite materials are multiphase solid materials that have one organic or inorganic nanoarchitectured compound with various nanostructures, such as nanoparticles, nanowires, nanorods, and nano-films, etc., or with multiphase solid materials (metals, oxides, polymers, ...

Focus on Nanotube Research

A novel way of arranging the atomic structure of a substance so that it can be made thousands of times stronger than in its native state. Often used to make duranium a further ten thousand times stronger. Thus, a lump of duranium can be made over ten million times stronger than the equivalent block of titanium. A one dimensional fullerene (a convex cage of atoms with only hexagonal and/ or pentagonal faces) with a cylindrical shape. Carbon nanotubes discovered in 1991 by Sumio Iijima resemble rolled up graphite, although they can not really be made that way. Depending on the direction that the tubes appear to have been rolled (quantified by the 'chiral vector'), they are known to act as conductors or semiconductors. Nanotubes are a proving to be useful as molecular components for nanotechnology. This book assembles and presents new and important research in the field.

Nanofibers are a flexible material with a huge range of potential applications in such areas as technical textiles. Functional nanofibers and their applications summarises key trends in the processing and applications of these exciting materials.Part one focuses on the types and processing of nanofibers. Beginning with an overview of the principles and techniques involved in their production, it goes on to review core-shell, aligned, porous and gradient nanofibers. The processing and application of composite functional nanofibers, carbon and polymer nanofiber reinforcements in polymer matrix composites, and inorganic functional nanofibers are then explored in detail, before part one conclude...
