This monograph presents a collection of results, observations, and examples related to dynamical systems described by linear and nonlinear ordinary differential and difference equations. In particular, dynamical systems that are susceptible to analysis by the Liapunov approach are considered. The naive observation that certain "diagonal-type" Liapunov functions are ubiquitous in the literature attracted the attention of the authors and led to some natural questions. Why does this happen so often? What are the spe cial virtues of these functions in this context? Do they occur so frequently merely because they belong to the simplest class of Liapunov functions and are thus more convenient, or ...
This book organizes the analysis and design of iterative numerical methods from a control perspective. A variety of applications are discussed, including iterative methods for linear and nonlinear systems of equations, neural networks for linear and quadratic programming problems and integration and shooting methods for ordinary differential equations.
This book introduces optimal control methods, formulated as optimization problems, applied to business dynamics problems. Business dynamics refers to a combination of business management and financial objectives embedded in a dynamical system model. The model is subject to a control that optimizes a performance index and takes both management and financial aspects into account. Business Dynamics Models: Optimization-Based One Step Ahead Optimal Control includes solutions that provide a rationale for the use of optimal control and guidelines for further investigation into more complex models, as well as formulations that can also be used in a so-called flight simulator mode to investigate dif...

VECPAR is a series of international conferences dedicated to the promotion and advancement of all aspects of high-performance computing for computational science, as an industrial technique and academic discipline, extending the fr- tier of both the state of the art and the state of practice. The audience for and participants in VECPAR are seen as researchers in academic departments, g- ernment laboratories and industrial organizations. There is now a permanent website for the series, http://vecpar.fe.up.pt, where the history of the conf- ences is described. This volume is part of the two-volume proceedings of the 19th International Conf- ence on Artificial Neural Networks (ICANN 2009), which was held in Cyprus during September 14–17, 2009. The ICANN conference is an annual meeting sp- sored by the European Neural Network Society (ENNS), in cooperation with the - ternational Neural Network Society (INNS) and the Japanese Neural Network Society (JNNS). ICANN 2009 was technically sponsored by the IEEE Computational Intel- gence Society. This series of conferences has been held annually since 1991 in various European countries and covers the field of neurocomputing, learning systems and related areas. Artificial neural networks provide an informa...
This book introduces a novel model-based dexterous manipulation framework, which, thanks to its precision and versatility, significantly advances the capabilities of robotic hands compared to the previous state of the art. This is achieved by combining a novel grasp state estimation algorithm, the first to integrate information from tactile sensing, proprioception and vision, with an impedance-based in-hand object controller, which enables leading manipulation capabilities, including finger gaiting. The developed concept is implemented on one of the most advanced robotic manipulators, the DLR humanoid robot David, and evaluated in a range of challenging real-world manipulation scenarios and tasks. This book greatly benefits researchers in the field of robotics that study robotic hands and dexterous manipulation topics, as well as developers and engineers working on industrial automation applications involving grippers and robotic manipulators.
This volume contains the proceedings of the workshop on Variational and Optimal Control Problems on Unbounded Domains, held in memory of Arie Leizarowitz, from January 9-12, 2012, in Haifa, Israel. The workshop brought together a select group of worldwide experts in optimal control theory and the calculus of variations, working on problems on unbounded domains. The papers in this volume cover many different areas of optimal control and its applications. Topics include needle variations in infinite-horizon optimal control, Lyapunov stability with some extensions, small noise large time asymptotics for the normalized Feynman-Kac semigroup, linear-quadratic optimal control problems with state delays, time-optimal control of wafer stage positioning, second order optimality conditions in optimal control, state and time transformations of infinite horizon problems, turnpike properties of dynamic zero-sum games, and an infinite-horizon variational problem on an infinite strip. This book is co-published with Bar-Ilan University (Ramat-Gan, Israel).
International journal devoted to pure and applied research on the use of scientific methods and information processing in business and industry. Articles may be in English or French.
