Sabine Stübler compares different proteasome isoforms and subtypes in terms of their transport and active site-related parameters applying an existing computational model. In a second step, the author extends this model to be able to describe the influence of proteasome inhibitors in in vitro experiments. The computational model, which describes the hydrolysis of short fluorogenic peptides by the 20S proteasome, is calibrated to experimental data from different proteasome isoforms using an approximate Bayesian computation approach. The dynamics of proteasome inhibitors are included into the model in order to demonstrate how to modulate the inhibitor’s transport parameters for strong or isoform-specific inhibition.

Learning from Animals?

Human language, cognition, and culture are unique; they are unparalleled in the animal kingdom. The claim that we can learn what makes us human by studying other animal species provokes vigorous reactions and many deny that comparative research can shed any light on the origins and character of human distinctive capacities. However, Learning from Animals? presents empirical research and an analysis of comparative approaches for an understanding of human uniqueness, arguing that we cannot know what capacities are uniquely human until we learn what other species can do. This interdisciplinary volume explores the prospects and problems of comparative approaches for understanding modern humansâ€...

The Feminist Encyclopedia of French Literature

The earliest known literary productions by women living in Europe were probably written by French writers. As early as the 12th century, women troubadours in the south of France were writing poems. French women continued writing through the ages, their number increasing as education became more available to women of all classes. And yet, of the great number of works by women writers who preceded the current feminist movement, very few have survived. A few writers such as Marie de France, George Sand, and Simone de Beauvoir became part of the canon. But critics, mostly male, had judged the works of only a few women writers worthy of recognition. As part of the feminist move to reclaim women w...
