Value Politics in the European Union
This book explores what drives value politics and the way in which it redraws political conflict at EU level. Based on case studies and analyses of statistical data, the book shows what the uses and roles of values have been at EU level over the past decades in both market-related policies and in identity, cultural and morality policies. It challenges the common assumption that the latter is more driven by value conflicts. The research shows the intrinsic similarities between all policy areas regarding the agency and limits of values as drivers of change or continuity. It argues that European values are a broad and flexible symbolic repertoire instrumentalised to serve as a resource for mobilization, legitimation/delegitimation, the conquest and conservation of power. Street-Level Bureaucrats' Impact on the Emergence of Local Governance Networks
This book focusses on the emergence of local governance networks and examines the role of street-level bureaucrats during this process. It aims to identify whether some organizations are favored as state partners, whereas others have a lower chance of becoming part of such networks. Four different potential logics explaining such divergencies are developed. To find out how street-level bureaucrats influence the formation of governance networks this study considers Germany as an empirical case and takes a closer look at the work of volunteer managers. To identify unequal behavior of bureaucrats, a mixed-methods design is used, including qualitative interviews as well as an innovative field experiment.

Political Science of Religion
This book introduces political science of religion – a coherent approach to the study of the political role of religion grounded in political science. In this framework, religion is viewed as a political ideology providing legitimation for power and motivating political attitudes and behaviors of the public. Religious organizations are political actors negotiating the political system in the pursuit of their faith-based objectives. Religion is thus interpreted as a power resource and religious groups as political players. The theoretical framework developed in the first part is applied to the study of theocracies and contemporary democracies, based on the case studies of Poland and the USA. The empirical analysis of resources, strategies and opportunities of religious actors demonstrates their ability to influence the politics of democracies and non-democracies alike. Using a multilevel approach, the book seeks to explain this tremendous political potential of religion.
