Surgical Infections

Surgical infections are caused by the breakdown of the equilibrium existing between organisms and the host. This may occur after a breach in a protective surface, as occurs after surgical trauma, changes in host resistance, or particular characteristics of the organism. The possible outcomes are abscess formation, local spread with/without tissue death, distant spread or resolution. A surgical infection is an infection requiring operative treatment (excision or drainage), and occupies an unvascularized space in tissue, or may occur in an operated site. Common examples of the former group are furuncles and carbuncles, hollow viscus inflammations, such as appendicitis, cholecystitis, and most abscesses. The latter group comprises all surgical site infections. This Research Topic provides comprehensive information on the biology, mechanisms, prevention and treatment of surgery-related infections.

Inguinal Hernia

Inguinal Hernia

The surgical treatment of hernia requires an extensive knowledge and technical ability. Astley Cooper stated that no disease of surgical interest requires so broad skills and knowledge as hernia and its variants. The history of groin hernia repair evolved from life-saving procedures (such as for incarcerated hernias) to elective operations performed as day-surgery procedure. The present book is designed to focus on specific topics and problems which a general surgeon dealing with groin hernia is very likely to face during his practice. Its aim is to provide the readers with informative and practical indications to understand, diagnose, and manage patients presenting these situations. It could hopefully stimulate further innovative studies and techniques suitable for treatment of these patients.

Soft-Tissue Reconstruction Using Biologic Tissue Matrix: Where Do We Stand?

Soft-tissue reconstruction for a variety of surgical conditions, such as abdominal wall hernia, hiatal hernia, stomal hernia, anal fistula and pelvic floor replacement remains a challenge. There is an insufficient level of high-quality evidence in the literature on the value of bioprosthetics for soft-tissue reconstruction. An expanded knowledge about their clinical efficacy is urgently needed.

Emergency Medicine, Trauma and Disaster Management

The number of natural and man-made disasters has risen dramatically over the last decade. Natural disasters, industrial accidents and terrorist attacks represent major incidents, often involving multiple casualties. In such cases, health professionals face multiple challenges because the type of medical care required differs from what is taught and provided in their everyday hospital duties. The aim of this book is to inform and prepare healthcare professionals for the challenges posed by major incidents, so that they can act effectively in medical teams sent on humanitarian missions or into conflict zones. It offers a holistic and horizontal approach covering all stages of the disaster mana...

Laparoscopic Ventral Hernia Repair

Primary and incisional ventral hernias are common conditions often encountered in surgical practice. Because of the frequency of this problem it has come to be managed by surgeons in general, regardless of the type of hospital or the conditions dealt with in their daily practice. Laparoscopic surgery has demonstrated to have an important role among the different technique described to repair ventral hernia with less recurrent rate, less morbidity and less overall cost than open conventional repair, with all the advange of the laparoscopic approach. As a result the indications for this surgical technique are currently being debated since the advantages are evident and progressive implementation is ensured. Now is the time to analyze the usefulness, results, technical variants, anatomic, physiologic and scientific basis and implications involved in implementation of laparoscopy as the technique of choice.

Thyroid Fine Needle Aspiration

This practical text and color atlas tells the story of 350 patients, covering a wide range of thyroid lesions with high quality composite images that correlate cytology with histology, and radiology with pathology. Each case includes clinical presentation and final pathology. Concise, easy-to-read text enables readers to quickly find the information they need for accurate diagnosis. 'Lookalike' lesions are grouped together so the subtle cytological differences can be appreciated. The author's practical approach explains mistakes made and lessons learned, so diagnostic pitfalls can be avoided. Triage algorithms and over 2000 printed photomicrographs are provided. The print book is accompanied by a CD-ROM offering images in downloadable format. Written by a leading cytopathologist who has performed onsite assessment for over 10,000 ultrasound-guided thyroid fine needle aspirations, this is an important resource for all healthcare professionals dealing with thyroid patients, including cytopathologists, surgical pathologists, cytotechnologists, sonographers, radiologists, endocrinologists and surgeons.
