Filipinos in the East Bay
Filipinos are a community nearly 2.5-million strong in the United States in 2007. At the turn of the 20th century, the first wave of Filipino migration began, continuing until the start of World War II. During this time span, sponsored students, veterans of the Philippine-American War and their families, and young men recruited in the Philippines to serve in the U.S. military or work in California and Hawaii's expanding agricultural industries would all arrive in the United States. On the San Francisco Bay Area's eastern shore, Filipino presence in the labor force transitioned with the region's economic and social evolution from mainly farm and service laborers to industrial workers to professional, administrative, and service workers. Today the East Bay is a vibrant center of the Filipino community's deeply rooted and rich cultural, political, and economic life.

Reinventing New London
As the twentieth century dawned, New London, home to a dying whaling industry, was trying to reinvent itself as it had so many times before. When the U.S. Navy and the Coast Guard arrived, the city got a new lease on life. That is where Reinventing New London begins, chronicling the history of the Whaling City through vivid photographs taken over the next sixty years. During that time, the nation's first submarine base and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy were established, and those who were stationed there helped to win two world wars. But just as its future seemed assured, New London found itself in ruins after the catastrophic hurricane of 1938. From the ashes of the storm, the city built a seaside resort, Ocean Beach Park, on Long Island Sound. Meanwhile, New London faced its greatest challenge ever in the changing times after World War II. As residents and businesses fled to suburbia, the city undertook a bold campaign to reinvent itself yet again, and what resulted changed New London forever.

Bill Tague's Berkshires
The Berkshires are famous for their stunning beauty and the almost eerie way in which they dominate the western sector of Massachusetts. They tower over the towns in their valleys-Williamstown, Pittsfield, North Adams, Stockbridge, and Lenox among them-and affect life there in many ways. The landscape was of tremendous appeal to photographer Bill Tague, who lived on a flank of Mount Greylock. Tague possessed a unique talent: he was equally capable of creating haunting landscape images as he was of drawing out the diverse personalities of his human subjects. Between January, 1952, and his death in November, 1990, Tague produced "Eagle Eye," a weekly page of photographs, for The Berkshire Eagle. From images of Mount Greylock through the seasons to candid portrayals of faces at Tanglewood, at Lake Pontoosuc, and at the Clark Art Institute, to telling shots of Norman Rockwell and Anna Mary "Grandma" Moses, Tague's eye was so astute that his life's work constitutes a discerning mirror held up to his time and place on earth.
