Bioelectrochemistry II

This book contains the lectures of the second course devoted to bioelectro chemistry, held within the framework of the International School of Biophysics. In this course another very large field of bioelectrochemistry, i. e. the field of Membrane Phenomena, was considered, which itself consists of several different, but yet related subfields. Here again, it can be easily stated that it is impossible to give a complete and detailed picture of all membrane phenomena of biological interest in a short course of about one and half week. Therefore the same philosophy, as the one of the first course, was followed, to select a series of lectures at postgraduate level, giving a synthesis of several m...

Fluctuations and Order

The volume that you have before you is the result of a growing realization that fluctuations in nonequilibrium systems playa much more important role than was 1 first believed. It has become clear that in nonequilibrium systems noise plays an active, one might even say a creative, role in processes involving self-organization, pattern formation, and coherence, as well as in biological information processing, energy transduction, and functionality. Now is not the time for a comprehensive summary of these new ideas, and I am certainly not the person to attempt such a thing. Rather, this short introductory essay (and the book as a whole) is an attempt to describe where we are at present and how...

Developments in Biophysical Research

This volume derives from papers presented at the 4th biennial meeting of the Italian Biophysical Society, held in Parma in October 1979. It includes review lectures presented by guest scientists (R.H. Adrian, E. Neher, S. Ottolenghi, and G. Zaccai); the remaining reviews and papers present some of the problems currently under study in our country. One can see that biophysical problems are studied under differ ent academic roofs, i.e., at physiological or biochemical departments. We consider this a strength and a weakness at the same time. The "Italian Bioenergetics Group" contributed to the success of the meeting, as much as the groups working in various laboratories of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, in particular those of the National Group of Cybernetics and Biophysics. To them, and to the University of Parma, which contributed financial and organiza tional support, the Editors of this volume wish to express their appreciation. Particular thanks are to Drs. E. Carbone and V. Lenci, who spent time and effort for the meeting and in collecting the papers. The special care in the typing goes to the credit of Miss Rampello, to whom the Editors express their deepest gratitude.

Lévy Statistics and Spin Glass Behavior in Random Lasers

This book could not have been timelier. It describes a multidisciplinary experimental work reported in the literature from 2015 to 2022, supported by a theoretical proposal from 2006, exploiting random lasers and random fiber lasers as a photonic platform to perform statistical physics, as Lévy-like statistics and extreme events, as well as complex systems, including turbulence, replica symmetry breaking (RSB) and Floquet states. Most of the theoretical grounds for these subjects date back to the 1970s. Of particular relevance for the timing for this book is the fact that two of the Nobel Prize winners of 2021 have their work connected through the experimental and theoretical work exploitin...
