This book highlights the best practices regarding nanoscience and nanotechnology for agriculture and environmental sectors to shape sustainable development thought to improve the quality and quantity of the agriculture products and to decrease the collateral effect of nanotechnology in the ecosystems. Besides, leading nanotechnologies are showed and discussed to guarantee their proper management in lands and ecosystems. Therefore, nanotechnologies such as agronanobiotechnology, nanofertilization, pest control, magnetofection for plant breeding, plant molecular farming, OMICs technologies, phytonanotechnology, nanoremediation, etc. are described in five sections and 21 chapters. Undoubtedly it is an ideal and updated book for undergraduate or postgraduate students, and scientists or researchers involved in nanoscience, nanotechnology, crop production, and remediation technologies as well as for those researchers that solving technical problems regarding the crop management and the human and environmental health without hampering the pursuit of sustainable development goals.
Based on their potent antioxidant properties, the possible exploitation of natural phenolic compounds as food supplements as well as functional ingredients in the food and cosmetic industry is gaining more and more attention. This book contains original research articles and a review reporting innovative applications of natural phenolic compounds in the field of nutrition and biomedicine, as active ingredients for the prevention of oxidative-stress-related diseases, and as additives in smart food packaging, biomedical devices, and cosmetic products. The growing importance of agri-food wastes as easily accessible sources of phenolic compounds as well as of synthetic derivatives of natural compounds with improved antioxidant properties is also highlighted. Finally, novel technologies to improve extraction yields, stability, bioavailability, and delivery of antioxidant compounds for healthcare products or for skin applications are described.
Nanobiotechnology in agriculture is a new knowledge area that offers novel possibilities to achieve high productivity levels at manageable costs during the production and merchandising of crops. This book shows us how we can use the cutting-edge knowledge about agriculture, nanotechnology, and biotechnology to increase the agricultural productivity and shape a sustainable future in order to increase the social welfare in rural areas and preserve the environmental health. Specialists from several countries will provide their feedback on a range of relevant topics such as environment-friendly use of nanofertilisers, nanodevices, nano-food packaging, nanocoating and nanocarriers and their relationship with the modern agriculture.
This book presents a broad number of recent discoveries, advances and important results concerning sunflower (Helianthus annus) crops and its related fields, with emphasis on the detailed study of several diseases and pests that can affect sunflowers (production, water resources needed, economy impact) in different regions of the globe, including Russia, both North and South America, Africa, India and Europe. We are all well aware of the increasing importance, as well as the economic impact that these plants have reached in recent years, not only in the food industry but also in the western energy market, with the increasing use of sunflower oil as a natural energy resource for biodiesel and...
This annual press freedom survey, now covering 195 countries and territories, has tracked trends in media freedom worldwide sine 1980. It provides comparative rankings and examines the legal environment for the media, political pressures that influence reporting, and economic factors that affect access to information.
Agriculture is considered as a backbone of developing nations as it caters the needs of the people, directly or indirectly. The global agriculture currently faces enormous challenges like land degradation and reduced soil fertility, shrinking of land, low production yield, water accessibility and a dearth of labor due to evacuation of individuals from farming. Besides, the global population increases at an exponential rate and it is predicted that the global population will be 9 billion by 2050 that in turn leads to food crisis in near future. Although, green revolution revolutionizes the agriculture sector by enhancing the yield but it was not considered as a sustainable approach. Exorbitan...
Foreseeing and planning for all of the possibilities and pitfalls involved in bringing a biotechnology innovation from inception to widespread therapeutic use takes strong managerial skills and a solid grounding in biopharmaceutical research and development procedures. Unfortunately there has been a dearth of resources for this aspect of the field.
Myelomonocytes are the multipotent cells in the stage of blood cell differentiation, which mainly comprise blood monocytes, tissue macrophages and subset of dendritic cells. Actually, their position and ability of judgement of the health of tissue or organ environment are the key initiators of tissue-specific immune response in a local and global fashion. Interestingly, the morpho-functional aspects of this group of cells vary to a wide range with their positional diversity. Their ability to communicate or represent the tissue microenvironment to the peripheral immune system and efficiency to engage the system to effector activation hold the key for a successful immune endeavour. The present volume shows some glimpses of such an extensive area of current immunology research.
Soybean is one of the major world crops. In 2008, the world consumption of soybean was over 221 million metric tons of which approximately 50% came from the U.S.. Soybean seed is a major source of protein, oil, carbohydrates, isoflavones, and minerals for humans and animals. This book presents current research data from across the globe in the study of soybean cultivation, its uses and nutrition. Some topics discussed herein include soybean seed composition and quality; soybean peroxidase applications in wastewater treatment; soybean germination and cancer disease; soybean oil deodoriser distillate; soybean oil in health and disease; and the use of soybean peptone in bacterial cultivations for vaccine production.
