Challenges and Opportunities in Education for Refugees in Europe

The wave of migrants arriving in Europe fleeing from war or hard living conditions represents both a challenge and a great educational opportunity for the European school systems. Currently, research and good practice in this field have been mainly developed within the boundaries of national educational politics and policies, addressing distinct populations. This fragmentation has stood in the way of a systematic analysis of the question at the European level, which is a necessary condition for the advancement of successful educational interventions. The book aims to offer substantive insights for researchers, policy makers, and teachers concerned with the effective inclusion of refugees within education by collecting and comparing the growing body of knowledge that is emerging from eight European countries. Contributors are: Oula Abu-Amsha, Miki Aristorenas, Tatjana Atanasoska, Benjamin Brass, Henrik Bruns, Heike de Boer, Sanja Grbić, Hermina Gunnþórsdóttir, Laure Kloetzer, Tünde Kovacs Cerović, Louise Pagden, Michelle Proyer, Wayne Veck, Dragan Vesić, and Julie Wharton.

Migration movements have been a constant in the societies of the past, as well as in postmodern society. However, in the past ten years, the increase in political, economic, and religious conflict amongst nations; the increase of the poverty index; and many and various natural disasters have duplicated the forced displacement of millions of people across the seven continents of the planet. This situation brings important challenges in terms of the vulnerability, inequity, and discrimination that certain peoples suffer. Professionals from the fields of the social sciences, education, psychology, and international law share the fact that education represents an opportunity for children and you...

The social dimension of higher education emphasises the need to create more flexible learning and participation pathways within higher education for all students. In recent years, several projects have been developed and research groups created that have allowed considerable progress in the promotion and monitoring of more inclusive policies in this field. However, designing and implementing programmes providing attention to vulnerable groups remains a challenge for universities. Including the most significant contributions of the European project ACCESS4ALL, the book presents conceptual aspects related to the inclusive university, such as the quality and transitions linked to the treatment of diversity, good inclusion practices in six European countries, and a set of tools to identify dysfunctions and promote inclusion in higher education. Contributors are: Kati Clements, Fabio Dovigo, Joaquín Gairín, Romiță Iucu, Miguel Jerónimo, Lisa Lucas, Tiina Mäkelä, Elena Marin, Saana Mehtälä, Fernanda Paula Pinheiro, David Rodríguez-Gómez, Cecilia Inés Suárez, Mihaela Stîngu and Sue Timmis.

The training of mentor teachers for newly hired teachers in Italy. An ecosystemic perspective

DOI: 10.13134/979-12-5977-348-7

The Impact of COVID-19 on Early Childhood Education and Care

This collection brings together a diverse group of scholars from throughout the world who have grappled with and investigated the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on the lives of young children. Profound changes have occurred in all facets of early childhood education and care (ECEC). Young children and their families, college students enrolled in teacher preparation programs, inservice teachers/caregivers, and postsecondary faculty have endured prolonged periods of quarantine, disruption, stress, and grief precipitated by the pandemic. These consequences have been even more challenging for individuals and groups who were already struggling or marginalized prior to the advent of the coronavirus. Collectively, the chapter authors draw upon findings from their research and insights gleaned from professional experiences to recommend ways of providing high-quality programs despite persistent global health threats.

The Multi(Inter)cultural School in Inclusive Societies

EU schools are today welcoming more and more pupils from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds, becoming increasingly culturally composite. However, language problems and cultural misunderstandings have the potential to arise from diversity and different cultural and origin affiliations. Some problematic areas concerning both language and educational aspects have emerged with the integration of children from different backgrounds at school. This collection of essays explores different aspects of multicultural and intercultural education, and highlights critical features of multicultural schools in Europe today. It analyses data and new research trends to provide valuable inputs in the field of education strategy, suggesting the review of educational methods and contents to ensure high quality education and training for all children. It offers a wide range of social cases and empirical analyses in both Western and non-Western settings, and will appeal to both educators and the wider public.
