Uno de los principales cuestionamientos a la comunicación fue siempre la supeditación de los intereses de las grandes empresas de comunicación en desmedro de la libertad periodística. La empresa de comunicación fue, junto a los poderes políticos y económicos, uno de los verdugos al ideal del periodismo, la libertad de expresión. La propiedad de los medios estuvo ligado a las críticas de la manipulación de la opinión pública ante los intereses generados por parte de quienes asumen esta propiedad.

En los últimos años el aumento significativo de las nuevas tecnologías de la información y la comunicación (TICs) y su uso en las redes sociales ofrecen nuevos espacios para la organización social y a la vez nuevas oportunidades a los gobiernos y a las comunidades para incrementar la resiliencia ante la vulnerabilidad de sociedades expuestas a un mayor riesgo. Son una multitud los ejemplos de casos a nivel nacional e inter-nacional que revelan el impacto que las redes sociales tienen como répli-ca a las necesidades de la población en situaciones límites, ya que han transformado no solo la percepción que se tenía del riesgo, sino que ma-nifiestan nuevas expectativas ante la respuesta de instituciones y de la propia población civil.
Periodismo narrativo y nuevos escenarios de comunicaci—n
Con cada día que pasa, nuevas maneras de trasmitir información invaden el panorama comunicacional. Obligan al periodista a tener que adaptarse, no quedar atascado en una forma de trabajar que necesite una puesta a punto. La prensa digital obligó a desarrollar al máximo la capacidad de síntesis, las redes sociales a manejar redacción web y fotografía, a la par que conocimientos de emisión en vídeo. Todo ello con un estilo más cercano, lejos del comunicado o dossier, para obligar al lector a consumir información y hacer que dicho proceso sea más ameno. Esto supone un primer síntoma de la crisis por la que pasa la profesión de periodismo: la "ocialización" de la comunicación. De la mano lleva a otra consecuencia: se ha confundido muchas veces el tratar de hacer más llevadera la materia informativa con la banalidad y el tratar de manera superficial la realidad. El público desconfía de los medios de comunicación por ello.

How Big (Small?) are Fiscal Multipliers?
We contribute to the intense debate on the real effects of fiscal stimuli by showing that the impact of government expenditure shocks depends crucially on key country characteristics, such as the level of development, exchange rate regime, openness to trade, and public indebtedness. Based on a novel quarterly dataset of government expenditure in 44 countries, we find that (i) the output effect of an increase in government consumption is larger in industrial than in developing countries, (ii) the fisscal multiplier is relatively large in economies operating under predetermined exchange rate but zero in economies operating under flexible exchange rates; (iii) fiscal multipliers in open economies are lower than in closed economies and (iv) fiscal multipliers in high-debt countries are also zero.

Social Democracy and the Crisis of Equality
This book analyses social democratic parties’ attempts to tackle inequality in increasingly challenging times. It provides a distinctive contribution to the literature on the so-called ‘crisis’ of social democracy by exploring the role of equality policy in this crisis. While the main focus is on analysing Australian Labor governments, examples are also given from a wide range of parties internationally. The book traces how a traditional focus on class has expanded to include other forms of inequality, including issues of gender, race, ethnicity and sexuality and explores both the intersections and potential tensions that result. Meanwhile there are new challenges for equality policy arising from a changing geo-economics (the rise of Asia), the legacies of neoliberalism and the impact of technological disruption.
