Behavioral strategy continues to attract increasing research interest within the broader field of strategic management. Research in behavioral strategy has clear scope for development in tandem with such traditional streams of strategy research that involve economics, markets, resources, and technology. The key roles of psychology, organizational behavior, and behavioral decision making in the theory and practice of strategy have yet to be comprehensively grasped. Given that strategic thinking and strategic decision making are importantly concerned with human cognition, human decisions, and human behavior, it makes eminent sense to bring some balance in the strategy field by complementing th...

The Nature of the New Firm

The emerging knowledge economy is prompting decisive changes in the organization of business firms. Corporate hierarchies flatten under the impact of ICT and the need to delegate decision rights. The boundaries of the firm shrink under the impact of outsourcing and viable relational contracting. However, we still know very little about the mechanics and manifestations of this process. Killian McCarthy, Maya Fiolet, and Wilfred Dolfsma s The Nature of the New Firm breaks new ground in our understanding of changing economic organization. It will appeal not only to theorists of the firm, but also to management scholars and sociologists interested in organization. Nicolai J. Foss, Copenhagen Bus...

Firm Competitive Advantage Through Relationship Management

Relationship management (RM) is an essential part of business, but its success as a business model can be hard to measure, with some firms embracing a model that is truly relationship-orientated, while others claim to be relationship-orientated but in fact prefer transactional short-term gain. This open access book aims to develop a mid-range theory of relationship management, examining truly relationship-orientated firms to discover not only what qualities these firms have that make them successful at the RM model, but also what benefits this model has for the firm. It addresses questions like how RM-mature companies achieve and sustain competitive advantage, and what determines the scale and scope of these firms, illustrating with case studies. This book will be of interest to scholars studying leadership and strategy, especially those interested in relationship management, business ethics and corporate social responsibility. It will also be of interest to professionals looking to develop their understanding of relationship management.

Adaptation Or Expiration in Family Firms

The author explores determinants of organisational flexibility in this examination of four family-owned companies, two flexible and two less flexible, from the edible oil and pharmaceutical industries. By means of an innovative analysis - including longitudinal analysis, coding analysis, statistical analysis and the use of original display charts - he illustrates the determinants of organisational flexibility and sheds light on the process of transformation and adaptation of family firms, an area that has not yet been the subject of extensive empirical inquiry. The management literature has claimed that the complexity of business contexts has forced firms to confront hypercompetitive or high...

Strategic Discourse

Strategic discourse is a concept that draws attention to the informal discursive processes surrounding the making of strategy. Barbara Kruse approaches the topic by analysing the actors and strategic issues that constitute discourse. Why are some actors actively involved and make a contribution and others don't - even though they seem willing to? Why do some issues gain attention and others don't - even though they would be of strategical relevance? To tackle these questions, the author employs a "strategic arena" as a metaphor. This analogy captures the setting where actors and strategic issues come together; and it assembles time-spatial, strategic and discursive aspects providing fruitful insights for management. Drawing on theories from strategic management and communication science, Barbara Kruse explores the practices of strategic discourse in various companies and derives key levers for designing processes of strategy-making: giving access to the relevant actors and strategic issues, providing the conditions for thinking without constraint, and managing the expectations of employees regarding participation.
