Researching Sexual Behavior

These 22 contributions from the April 1996 meeting hosted by the Kinsey Institute at Indiana U. present international perspectives on debates about methodological differences in surveys of sexual behavior, and in particular, the difficulties with generalizing methods across contrasting cultures. The authors discuss key issues relating to both qualitative and quantitative methods, including adaptations of method for groups, the use of survey data to measure change in behavior over time, and participation bias. Determinants of High Risk Sexual Behavior

AIDS has become a ubiquitous disease of catastrophic proportions. In this 'sex study' included as part of the Advocate magazine in 1994, attitudes and sexual activities of 13,000 gay men nationwide were surveyed. A set of research hypotheses were made, these were: that there would be a relationship between various sociodemographic, intepersonal and relational, substance use, sexual, experiential, and health care variables and high-risk sexual behavior. Some of these hypotheses were confirmed, while others were not. The particular value of this study is that it was nationwide, contained large numbers of participants and large numbers of variables, included all sizes of metropolitan areas, and...

The Story of Sexual Identity

This book assembles a diverse group of scholars working within a new, pathbreaking paradigm of sexual science, fusing perspectives from history, sociology, and psychology. The contributors are united in their commitment to the idea of "narrative" as central to the study of sexual identity, offering an analytic approach to social science inquiry on sexual identity that restores the voices of sexual subjects. The result is a rich examination of lives in context, with an eye toward multiplicity and meaning across the life course. Central to the chapters in this volume is the significance of history, generation, and narrative in the provision of a workable and meaningful configuration of identity.

Sexual Behavior

Many issues remain unresolved in sexuality. In some cases this is because the infor mation is not available to resolve them. In others it is, but the available conclusions the information supports block its acceptance, because they conflict with the posi tions of dominant groups in the politics of sexuality. Possibly the most obvious example is the determination of many theorists to ignore the evidence that while men rarely report being sexually assaulted, when questioned in community surveys, they make up a third of the victims, and a quarter of the perpetrators of sexual assault are women. These findings are incompatible with the feminist theory that sexual assault is not a sexual act, but...

Crowd Control

Mike and Myra come to the Berkshires to identify the body of friend and employee, Bernie Peters, and drawn into a battle against the same web of conspiracy that killed him, uncover, bit by bit, an insidious plot that threatens more than just the small city of Pittsfield. Along the way, their past history with each other helps shape a romantic plot line full of twists and turns. The duo encounters villainy in a variety of adversaries, and the most innocuous and familiar locales become eerily menacing in a life and death game of political and scientific intrigue.
