Unwilling Executioner is the first book to examine the deep-rooted relationship between the development of crime fiction as a genre and the consolidation of the modern state. It offers a far-reaching and wide-ranging perspective on this unfolding relationship over a three hundred year period but is not a straightforward and conventional narrative history of the genre. It is part of a new and exciting critical move to read crime fiction as a transnationalphenomenon and to examine crime novelists in an innovative comparative context, taking them out of their discreet national traditions. Considers Anglo-American crime-writing, as well as works published inFrance, Italy, Germany, Ireland, Japan, South Africa and elsewhere, it addresses the related questions of why crime fiction is political and how particular examples of the genre engage with the complicated issue of political commitment.
This miscellaneous volume aims at offering a fresh and updated view of adaptation and transmedial practices. In the wake of Linda Hutcheon’s groundbreaking study, A Theory of Adaptation (2006), it discusses theories and exemplary case studies from different critical perspectives and points of view assessing past and present trends, and envisioning future prospects. The volume is divided in three macro-sections: Theories explores some methodological and theoretical facets of adaptation; Practices I includes analyses of literary, cinematographic and theatrical texts; Practices II discusses transmedial examples relating to arts. The book ends with the interview with the Czech-German artist Michael Bielický, a pioneer in the use of multiple media (especially digital ones).

Travel writing, migrant writing, exile writing, expatriate writing, and even the fictional travelling protagonists that emerge in literary works from around the globe, have historically tended to depict mobility as a masculine phenomenon. The presence of such genres in women’s writing, however, poses a rich and unique body of work. This volume examines the texts of Francophone women who have experienced or reflected upon the experience of transnational movement. Due to the particularity of their relationship to home, and the consequent impact of this on their experience of displacement, the study of women's mobility opens up new questions in our understanding of the movement from place to place, and in our broader understanding of colonial and postcolonial worlds. Addressing the proximities and overlaps that exist between the experiences of women exiles, migrants, expatriates and travellers, the collected essays in this book seek to challenge the usefulness, relevance or validity of such terms for conceptualising today’s complex patterns of transnational mobility and the gendered identities produced therein.
