The role of kinins in both physicologic and pathologic processes still remains to be elucidated definitively. Thus, these proceedings contain new and unpublished information on the chemistry, biochemistry, physicology, pharmacology, as well as pathophysiology of vasopeptides. Recent data on atructureactivity relationships of kinin analogues are complemented by a description of radioimmunoassay techniques for kinins, and studies on the site of synthesis of substrates for kinin-forming enzymes. Under intensive study, and securing an important place in the symposium, are the studies of the interaction of the kinin-forming system with components of the fibrinolysin, blood coagulation, and complement systems. The primary role of Hageman factor in the release of kinins receives additional support.
The diversity and significance of recent research on the kallikrein-kinin system provided the impetus for this international conference, the purpose of which was the assessment of our knowledge and the development of a base from which to plan future research. Through the generous support of the Fogarty International Center and of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, the Organizing Committee was able to bring together authorities in virtually every aspect of kinin research. The kallikrein-kinin field was divided into three major areas: A) Characterization and assays of components of the kallikrein-kinin systems; B) Interacting systems: Fibrinolysis, complement, coagulation, and prostaglandins; and C) Physiological, pathological, and clinical significance. Invited experts were instructed to present concise critical reviews along with any new data. Time was a)so provided for discussants to present relevant comments and data. Selected discussions accompany the keynote reports, and these comprise the short chapters.
In September 1983 the First International Headache Congress took place, the founding congress of the International Headache Society (lHS). This meeting was attended by around 200 headache specialists from some 20 countries. One of the principal goals of the IHS, which was formed in London in 1982, is to promote and stimulate interest and research in the headache field. In addition to the sponsorship of continued-education events, this also involves the coordination of scientific pro jects and the organization of future conferences. There is no doubt that headaches represent an everyday problem in medical practice. When the first headache clinics were established some years ago, they were reg...
