Captivity Beyond Prisons

Today the United States leads the world in incarceration rates. The country increasingly relies on the prison system as a “fix” for the regulation of societal issues. Captivity Beyond Prisons is the first full-length book to explicitly link prisons and incarceration to the criminalization of Latina (im)migrants. Starting in the 1990s, the United States saw tremendous expansion in the number of imprisoned (im)migrants, specifically Latinas/os. Consequently, there was also an increase in the number of deportations. In addition to regulating society, prisons also serve as a reproductive control strategy, both in preventing female inmates from having children and by separating them from thei...

The Media and International Communication

  • Categories: Art

The twenty-first century is witness to complex social, political, and cultural phenomena transforming the world in which we live. There are numerous aspects to this global process; most of them, however, are related one way or another to the media of communication which foster and accelerate it. The chapters in this book approach media and international/intercultural communication from various global perspectives. The authors provide insight into the impact of media on different contexts, cultures and nations. One theme that weaves its way throughout this collection of essays is an intercultural one, broadly defined as the contact point between two cultures that changes both to some degree. Scholars from different places in the world try to understand, explain and/or argue from a variety of traditions, perspectives and values. They examine the contact point between culture and identity, media and culture, art and media, technology and translation, theater and culture, etc., in order to better understand how and to what degree changes occur.

Interdisciplinary Statistics in Mexico

Interdisciplinary Statistics in Mexico

The volume includes a collection of peer-reviewed contributions from among those presented at the FNE, the main conference organized every two years by the Mexican Statistical Society (AME), and the 2020 AME Virtual Meeting. Statistical research in Latin America is prolific and research networks span both within and outside the region. As much of the work is typically carried out and published in Spanish, a large portion of the interested public is denied access to interesting findings, and the goal of this volume is therefore to provide access to selected works from Mexican collaborators and their international research networks to a wider audience. It may be especially attractive to academics interested in the latest methodological advances, while professionals from other disciplines may also find value in these new tools for data analysis. In 2021, the conference broadly focused on the interdisciplinary aspects of Statistics.

Selected Contributions on Statistics and Data Science in Latin America

The volume includes a collection of peer-reviewed contributions from among those presented at the main conference organized yearly by the Mexican Statistical Association (AME) and every two years by a Latin-American Confederation of Statistical Societies. For the 2018 edition, particular attention was placed on the analysis of highly complex or large data sets, which have come to be known as “big data”. Statistical research in Latin America is prolific and research networks span within and outside the region. The goal of this volume is to provide access to selected works from Latin-American collaborators and their research networks to a wider audience. New methodological advances, motivated in part by the challenges of a data-driven world and the Latin American context, will be of interest to academics and practitioners around the world.
