The feasibility of using thermal drop-on-demand ink jet printing to print pigmented ink systems onto textile materials was investigated. Preliminary studies showed that a novel binder system, Synthappret BAP (traditionally used as a shrink resist treatment for wool), could be successfully incorporated within a screen ink formulation for printing onto cotton fabric. Such a printing ink produced a high quality print which offered the required fastness properties of a textile print whilst maintaining a soft fabric handle. The cross-linking mechanism/properties of the Synthappret BAP were fully characterised. It was found that Synthappret BAP underwent rapid self cross-linking at elevated temper...

The Printing Ink Manual

The Printing Ink Manual was first published in 1961 under the auspices of the Society of British Printing Ink Manufacturers with the object of providing an authoritative work on printing ink technology. This, the fourth edition, continues that purpose and presents a comprehensive study of the current 'state of the art' in the ink industry. For those starting in the printing ink industry it is a textbook dealing with all aspects of the formulation and manufacture of printing ink. For the ink technician it is a practical manual and useful source of reference. For printers and users of printed material the manual supplies helpful information on the nature and behaviour of ink both on the printing press and as the finished print. Readers with a little scientific knowledge will have no difficulty in using the manual, but as in previous editions, sufficient chemistry and physics have been introduced to assist the advanced technician and research scientist.

This is the magnum opus on digital printing and the book to read before color calibrating your monitor or wondering about differences in pigmented and dye-based inks. With little in the way of “how-to,” the book focuses more on why and showcases eloquent photographs, including a heartbreakingly beautiful portrait of Marilyn Monroe, a naked World War II bomber tail gunner, and the inevitable “Emperor’s New Clothes” work. Equally heartbreaking for far different reasons is Henry Wilhelm’s essay “A History of Permanence” that includes a section called “The Totally Lost Kodacolor Era” that will leave you stunned by the corporate callousness that’s described. This book not only deserves to be on the bookshelf of anybody who cares about photography, it deserves to be read.
