Elements of Advanced Mathematical Analysis for Physics and Engineering

Deep comprehension of applied sciences requires a solid knowledge of Mathematical Analysis. For most of high level scientific research, the good understanding of Functional Analysis and weak solutions to differential equations is essential. This book aims to deal with the main topics that are necessary to achieve such a knowledge. Still, this is the goal of many other texts in advanced analysis; and then, what would be a good reason to read or to consult this book? In order to answer this question, let us introduce the three Authors. Alberto Ferrero got his degree in Mathematics in 2000 and presently he is researcher in Mathematical Analysis at the Università del Piemonte Orientale. Filippo...

Recent Trends in Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations I

This book is the first of two volumes which contain the proceedings of the Workshop on Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations, held from May 28-June 1, 2012, at the University of Perugia in honor of Patrizia Pucci's 60th birthday. The workshop brought t

Analytic Functions Integral Transforms Differential Equations

Differential equations play a relevant role in many disciplines and provide powerful tools for analysis and modeling in applied sciences. The book contains several classical and modern methods for the study of ordinary and partial differential equations. A broad space is reserved to Fourier and Laplace transforms together with their applications to the solution of boundary value and/or initial value problems for differential equations. Basic prerequisites concerning analytic functions of complex variable and Lp spaces are synthetically presented in the first two chapters. Techniques based on integral transforms and Fourier series are presented in specific chapters, first in the easier framew...

Geometric Properties for Parabolic and Elliptic PDE's

The study of qualitative aspects of PDE's has always attracted much attention from the early beginnings. More recently, once basic issues about PDE's, such as existence, uniqueness and stability of solutions, have been understood quite well, research on topological and/or geometric properties of their solutions has become more intense. The study of these issues is attracting the interest of an increasing number of researchers and is now a broad and well-established research area, with contributions that often come from experts from disparate areas of mathematics, such as differential and convex geometry, functional analysis, calculus of variations, mathematical physics, to name a few. This volume collects a selection of original results and informative surveys by a group of international specialists in the field, analyzes new trends and techniques and aims at promoting scientific collaboration and stimulating future developments and perspectives in this very active area of research.

Math in the Time of Corona

The title of this book, Math in the Time of Corona, has been drawn from the highly acclaimed novel by Gabriel García Márquez, Love in the Time of Cholera. The volume editor, Alice Wonders, holds a fictitious name that represents the mathematics publishing group at Springer Nature. Undeterred by disasters, so many mathematical and scientific discoveries have been made during times of duress or confinement. Unlike most any other subject, mathematics may be researched from anywhere. Covid-19, like Cholera, implementation of vaccinations have been uneven throughout the globe since the beginning of 2021. However, there has been a renewed hope for a return to normalcy though the timing will no d...

This volume of contributions pays tribute to the life and work of Djairo Guedes de Figueiredo on the occasion of his 80th birthday. The articles it contains were born out of the ICMC Summer Meeting on Differential Equations – 2014 Chapter, also dedicated to de Figueiredo and held at the Universidade de São Paulo at São Carlos, Brazil from February 3-7, 2014. The contributing authors represent a group of international experts in the field and discuss recent trends and new directions in nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations and systems. Djairo Guedes de Figueiredo has had a very active scientific career, publishing 29 monographs and over one hundred research articles. His influ...

Geometric Properties for Parabolic and Elliptic PDE's

This book contains the contributions resulting from the 6th Italian-Japanese workshop on Geometric Properties for Parabolic and Elliptic PDEs, which was held in Cortona (Italy) during the week of May 20–24, 2019. This book will be of great interest for the mathematical community and in particular for researchers studying parabolic and elliptic PDEs. It covers many different fields of current research as follows: convexity of solutions to PDEs, qualitative properties of solutions to parabolic equations, overdetermined problems, inverse problems, Brunn-Minkowski inequalities, Sobolev inequalities, and isoperimetric inequalities.

Mathematical Models for Suspension Bridges

This work provides a detailed and up-to-the-minute survey of the various stability problems that can affect suspension bridges. In order to deduce some experimental data and rules on the behavior of suspension bridges, a number of historical events are first described, in the course of which several questions concerning their stability naturally arise. The book then surveys conventional mathematical models for suspension bridges and suggests new nonlinear alternatives, which can potentially supply answers to some stability questions. New explanations are also provided, based on the nonlinear structural behavior of bridges. All the models and responses presented in the book employ the theory of differential equations and dynamical systems in the broader sense, demonstrating that methods from nonlinear analysis can allow us to determine the thresholds of instability.
