A History of Italy 1700-1860

First Published in 1979, A History of Italy 1700-1860 provides a comprehensive overview of Italy’s political history from 1700-1860. Divided in five parts it deals with themes like the re-emergence of Italy; Italy as the ‘pawn’ of European diplomacy; social physiognomy of the Italian states; problems of the government; enlightenment and despotism (1760-90); the offensive against the Church; revolution and moderation (1789-1814); revolution and the break with the past; rationalization and social conservatism; the search for independence (1815-47); legitimacy and conspiracy; alternative paths towards a new Italy; and the cost of independence (1848-61). It fills a major gap and presents a thoughtful and well-integrated political narrative of this complex period in Italy’s development. This book is an essential read for students and scholars of Italian history and European history.

Introduction to Ultra Wideband for Wireless Communications

The Bhagvad Gita (18.49) Compared to traditional carrier-based, Ultra-Wide Band (UWB), or carrier-less, systems implement new paradigms in terms of signal generation and reception. Thus, designing an UWB communication system requires the understanding of how excess bandwidth and very low transmitted powers can be used jointly to provide a reliable radio link. UWB offers systems transceiver potential for very si...

Today's world is a world of nation-states; few have survived since the early modern period, some have existed for three hundred years, most came into being during the second part of the last century. Yet the equation between the state and the nation does not go back far in history, despite the prevailing tendency to view the state as closely linked to ethnicity. To challenge the latter this book attempts to examine statehood separately from the concept of ethnicity; it asks what is non-ethnic about statehood by looking at 'statehood before and beyond ethnicity'. A non-ethnic statehood is analysed in two forms: as a historical phenomenon at the time of the emergence of the early modern state (Part One) and as a historical tradition which had been pursued by the nation-builders in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries (Part Two). Instead of looking at great powers as traditional models of statehood, individual chapters focus on minor and less familiar states in Northern and Eastern Europe from the period c. 1600-2000, including Belgium, Bohemia, Greece, the Netherlands, Romania, Poland-Lithuania, Serbia and Montenegro, Sweden, Scotland and Transylvania.

It is widely known today that not only are the aged ageing, or the old getting older, but they are also increasing in number the world over. At the same time, proper care and support for our aged is increasingly at risk. Without some form of support, the quantitative extension of life cannot be matched by a qualitative one. This may mean that the opportunity provided by a longer life is squandered, and life itself, of course, is nothing if not opportunity. Societies find that self-sufficiency and independence not only contribute to individual well-being, but are also economically desirable due to the resultant increase in productivity. The challenges of daily living for a growing population o...

Current Technology Developments of WiMax Systems

Recent developments on wireless communication technology have resulted in tremendous innovations to make broadband wireless networks able to compete with 3G cellular network. IEEE 802.16X standards have not only specified WiMax wireless access networks but also designed a framework of wireless metropolitan area networks with mobility functionality. It is obvious that with further development of various WiMax technologies, wide range of high-quality, flexible wireless mobile applications and services could be provided, which will revolutionarily improve our modern life to achieve the goal of accessing the global information at any place and at any time by any mobile device in the future. Current Technology Developments of WiMax Systems addresses the recent developments of WiMax technologies for both academia and industry. It is expected to be a good reference for further research and development on WiMax systems.

Opera and Society in Italy and France from Monteverdi to Bourdieu

Opera and Society in Italy and France from Monteverdi to Bourdieu

This edited volume brings together academic specialists writing on the multi-media operatic form from a range of disciplines: comparative literature, history, sociology, and philosophy. The presence in the volume's title of Pierre Bourdieu, the leading cultural sociologist of the late twentieth century, signals the editors' intention to synthesise advances in social science with advances in musicological and other scholarship on opera. Through a focus on opera in Italy and France, the contributors to the volume draw on their respective disciplines both to expand our knowledge of opera's history and to demonstrate the kinds of contributions that stand to be made by different disciplines to the study of opera. The volume is divided into three sections, each of which is preceded by a concise and informative introduction explaining how the chapters in that section contribute to our understanding of opera.
