The Essex-Suffolk borderlands have always produced and attracted great artists, and the association of contemporary artists and craft workers within this part of England is equally significant. Yet until recently there has been no major arts centre which could highlight that heritage. Rhetoric, Social Value and the Arts
The book reveals how the ‘social value of art’ may have one meaning for a policy maker, another for a museum and still yet another for an artist – and it is therefore in the interaction between these agents that we learn the most about the importance of rhetoric and interpretation. As a trajectory in art history, socially engaged art has a long and established history. However, in recent years—or since ‘the social turn’ that occurred in the 1990s—the rhetoric surrounding the social value of art has been assimilated by cultural policy makers and museums. Interdisciplinary in its approach, and bringing together contributions from artists, curators and academics, the volume explores rhetoric, social value and the arts within different social, political and cultural contexts.
If Ever You're in the Area
Fear of invasion forms the basis of firstsite's latest exhibition and a series of related offsite projects, If Ever You're in the Area, developed by Cambridge-based artist Bettina Furnee. Ongoing, site-specific works on the Suffolk Coast are complemented by gallery works that explore similarities between differing forms of invasion, militaristic and environmental. The encroachment of the sea eroding the cliffs stands alongside the threat of wartime landings. Ideas around fear of attack and rituals of commemoration are explored in small-scale, ephemeral arrangements of objects. Ambiguous titles invite contemplation: Beachhead, Lines of Defence, Plain Sailing, Beached, Lost on the beach and It's a free country. The works consider some of the customs and rites we have devised to endorse and protect ourselves and our morality at important moments of change."

Love at First Site
"Love at First Site" is my analysis of the emotions which go into looking at a photo of someone or meeting them socially and how one can feel as a result. However, I don't stop there. As you read deeper into the book, you will read about relationships which become closer and more intense. No longer are they just in the mind of the writer, but now, they have entered the world of experience. As a teacher and student, I became familiar with many different types of poetry. And though I admire the works of writers like Sylvia Plath, John Berryman, Hart Crane and Wallace Stevens (as well as all of the Romantic poets, young and old), my major influences might be poets like Edgar Lee Masters and Edgar Arlington Robinson. While the difficult poets I have mentioned above seem to think naturally in metaphor (and thus the density and complexity of their work), I do not have that gift. My poems tend to be more prosaic (which is not to say they are not poems) and my main goal is help the reader experience beauty and loss: the two main ingredients that one of my favorite poets, Edgar Allan Poe advocated.
