Ernst Beyeler (1921-2010) was a titan of the international art scene in the twentieth century. Born in Basel, Switzerland, he began his career as an apprentice in an antiquarian bookstore, eventually taking over the business and shifting his focus from books to dealing and collecting art. Through his discerning eye for art, his close relationships with many of the twentieth century's great artists, and his role in the foundation of Art Basel, the world's largest art fair, Beyeler transformed his hometown into a hub for international art. Published in English for the first time, A Passion for Art tells Beyeler's unusually personal story, through interviews with Christophe Mory. Beyeler descri...
Artwork by Jenny Holzer. -- From product description.
For just a few years at the beginning of the twentieth century, Munich was the ?hot spot? of Germany?s artistic avant-garde. Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc?s initiative as founding editors of the almanac Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) was a stroke of luck for the arts. The journal and exhibition of the same name made international waves when they heralded the start of the modern era in Germany before the First World War. Since then, the names of the movement?s key players Franz Marc, Gabriele Münter, Alexej von Jawlensky, August Macke et al., signal an essential chapter in the international history of art marked by the transition of painting into a vibrant, colorful and transcendental form of abstraction. This beautiful publication that dedicates itself to this topic will show a revolutionary re-valuation of the arts in an open Europe.00Exhibition: Fondation Beyeler, Riehen/Basel, Switzerland (4.9.2016-22.1.2017).
The most comprehensive monograph on Turner Prize-nominated artist Peter Doig. In every generation of artists, there are a few-or perhaps just one-who propose a new set of questions and alter the way we understand art. Peter Doig is such an artist. While stories of painting's demise in the early 1990s deemed painters and their work quaintly anachronistic, Doig-looking ahead as much as back for inspiration-forged a new painterly language: an ironic mix of Romanticism and post-impressionism to create haunting and sometimes dreamlike landscape vistas. In this lavish new volume devoted to his entire career-which includes paintings, drawings, and reference material, such as found photographs-art h...
Christo and Jeanne-Claude's Umbrella Project in 1991 was the most ambitious and expensive project they have ever undertaken. 1340 blue six metre umbrellas were assembled and erected throughout a narrow valley in rural Japan. 7000 yellow umbrellas were similarly prepared across the Pacific in a dry expanse of Californian land. After months of gruelling process, the two countries united as the forest of umbrellas were opened simultaneously on both continents.
Edward Hopper's world-famous, instantly recognizable paintings articulate an idiosyncratic view of modern life, unfolding in a world of lonely lighthouses, gas stations, movie theaters, bars and hotel rooms. With his impressive subjects, independent pictorial vocabulary and virtuoso play of colors, Hopper's work continues to this day to color our memory and imaginary of the United States in the first half of the 20th century. Hopper began his career as an illustrator and became famous around the globe for his oil paintings. These paintings testify to the artist's great interest in the effects of color and his mastery in depicting light and shadow, at work whether the artist was painting alienated figures in dreamlike interiors or desolate American landscapes. Edward Hopper: A Fresh Look on Landscape is published to accompany a major exhibition at the Fondation Beyeler of Hopper's iconic images of the vast American landscape. The catalog gathers together paintings, watercolors and drawings made by the artist between the 1910s and the 1960s, and supplements them with essays by Erika Doss, David Lubin and Katharina Rüppell, focused on the subject of depicting the landscape.
Felix Gonzalez-Torres (1957-1996) is one of the most influential artists of his generation. This catalogue includes both rarely seen and more known paintings, sculptures, photographic works, and public projects, reflecting the full scope of the artist's short yet prolific career.Specific Objects Without Specific Form offered several exhibition versions (and none the authoritative one), all the better to present the oeuvre of an artist who put fragility, the passage of time, and the questioning of authority at the centre of his artwork. At each venue in which the show was hosted, the exhibition was co-curated with, and re-installed/re-imagined by a different invited artist whose practice has b...
"The success of the Galerie Beyeler, which led Ernst and Hildy Beyeler to found the Fondation Beyeler, began sixty years ago. Around sixteen thousand paintings, sculptures, and works on paper - not including prints and editions - passed through Baumleingasse 9, where the Beyelers took over an antiquarian bookstore in 1945. Its transformation into an art gallery was complete by 1947, and the address in Basel remains unchanged to this day." "An exemplary selection of me masterpieces that were handled by the gallery - and that have long since entered the great public and private collections of the world - can once again be seen in The Other Collection, making it possible to understand the distinctive beliefs, attitudes, and tastes of this remarkable couple. Among the highlights of this musee imaginaire are works by Bonnard, Braque, Cezanne, Dubuffet, Gauguin, Giacometti, Van Gogh, Gris, Kandinsky, Klee, Leger, Matisse, Miro, Mondrian, and Picasso." "This book contains 288 pages, 204 illustrations, 149 in color."--BOOK JACKET.
"Published on the occasion of the exhibition Louise Bourgeois & Pablo Picasso: Anatomies of Desire, Hauser & Wirth Zèurich, June 9-September 14, 2019."
