Forestville
Visitors to Forestville are taken aback by its picturesque valleys laden with roaming vineyards. However, Forestville is more than a gateway to the Russian River; it is a diverse array of businesses, wineries, farming, and recreation. Forestville grew from the Spanish land grant traded by Capt. Juan Bautista Rogers Cooper from his brother-in-law Gen. Mariano Vallejo in 1834 into the town known by passing travelers as Swindle Rig. In 1867, the town was named Forestville after Andrew Jackson Forrister, a saloon owner. It was set apart from other settlements by having the first powered sawmill in California and the Faudr Chair factory, the largest manufacturing plant in Sonoma County of that era. Collectors still seek out the factorys rawhide-bottom chairs. As a popular stop on the railway line, many vacationers from San Francisco passed through on their journeys to the Russian River. In 1963, the town continued to be different, setting aside land for a community youth park, so it is no wonder the towns slogan is Forestville the Great Life.
The Russian River
The Russian River begins in the hills of Mendocino County and meanders past Cloverdale and Healdsburg on its way to the sea. But when locals say "The Russian River" or even just "The River," they're talking about the region of redwoods and riverbanks in Sonoma County between Forestville and Jenner, celebrated since the late 19th century as a paradise for camping and fishing. Captured here in over 200 vintage photographs are the area's settlers, stores, festivals, resorts, and beaches-attractions that have drawn Bay Area tourists for over a century.Native Americans camped and fished along the lower River, but it was the potential for lumbering that drew the first White settlers and in the 1870s led to the building of railroads. Portraits of Early Sonoma County Settlers is the narrative history of sixteen early settlers in the area which is now Sonoma County, California. A number of these persons arrived before California became a state in 1850. A number of them were lured here by the Gold Rush of 1849. They engaged in wide and diverse activities. Several were directly or indirectly involved in the settlement and development of new towns in the area. Others contributed to the development of agriculture, schools, and religion. Some of them had to deal with the Mexican Government and the ranchos in early Alta California. Overall it gives a good picture of what the area was like as it moved towards and became a part of the United States of America.
