"If you Google Umbria, you'll likely see picturesque rolling hills and medieval villages perched on them. But in The Voice of the Rural, ethnomusicologist Alessandra Ciucci introduces us to the Moroccan migrant workers that labor in the province's Alta Valle del Tevere region, which has been transformed by agrobusiness. These migrants working in Umbria's tobacco fields and on its construction sites have been coming to the region for decades, and while some eventually save enough money to buy some land and build a house back home, most are only able to scrape together what little they can from season to season. Marginalized in Italy and far from their homes, these men turn to Moroccan traditi...
IIE/Joint Publishers Book of the Year Award 2016! Awarded for ‘an outstanding published book that focuses on a facet of industrial engineering, improves education, or furthers the profession’. Engineering Decision Making and Risk Management emphasizes practical issues and examples of decision making with applications in engineering design and management Featuring a blend of theoretical and analytical aspects, this book presents multiple perspectives on decision making to better understand and improve risk management processes and decision-making systems. Engineering Decision Making and Risk Management uniquely presents and discusses three perspectives on decision making: problem solving,...
This judicious selection of articles combines mathematical and numerical methods to apply parameter estimation and optimum experimental design in a range of contexts. These include fields as diverse as biology, medicine, chemistry, environmental physics, image processing and computer vision. The material chosen was presented at a multidisciplinary workshop on parameter estimation held in 2009 in Heidelberg. The contributions show how indispensable efficient methods of applied mathematics and computer-based modeling can be to enhancing the quality of interdisciplinary research. The use of scientific computing to model, simulate, and optimize complex processes has become a standard methodology in many scientific fields, as well as in industry. Demonstrating that the use of state-of-the-art optimization techniques in a number of research areas has much potential for improvement, this book provides advanced numerical methods and the very latest results for the applications under consideration.
This book brings together a collection of chapters that focus on the relationship among electrical, chemical, and mechanical properties and the study of adjusting one property through the control of another, namely, Electro-Chemo-Mechanics (ECM). The authors examine how this relationship can result in beneficial properties, such as mixed ionic and electronic conductivity, in oxides, upon oxygen deficiency or lithium insertion (electro-chemo) and/or changes in ionic and electronic mobility observed in strained systems (electro-mechano). They also consider how ECM interactions can be responsible for large stresses from non-stoichiometry induced lattice dilation (chemo-mechano). While many volumes are available devoted to the study of the origins and characteristics of electro-chemical relationships, they form the well-known field of electrochemistry, this volume is highly novel in its examination of the corresponding electro-mechanical, chemo-mechanical, and electro-chemo-mechanical relationships. The book is ideal for researchers and design engineers interested in energy storage and conversion and the electrical and mechanical properties of materials.
Between 1555 and 1870, papal authorities created legal roadblocks to keep Rome's ghetto-bound Jews from obtaining kosher meat. But Jewish butchers found ways to circumvent canon law by working with their Christian counterparts. Kenneth Stow describes this complex collaboration, which enabled Jews to maintain their traditions in a hostile city.
This book -- the third and final volume in a series describing battery-management systems – shows you how to use physics-based models of battery cells in a computationally efficient way for optimal battery-pack management and control to maximize battery-pack performance and extend life. It covers the foundations of electrochemical model-based battery management system while introducing and teaching the state of the art in physics-based methods for battery management. Building upon the content in volumes I and II, the book helps you identify parameter values for physics-based models of a commercial lithium-ion battery cell without requiring cell teardown; shows you how to estimate the inter...
Efficiency and life time of solar cells, energy and power density of the batteries, and costs of the fuel cells alike cannot be improved unless the complex electronic, optoelectronic, and ionic mechanisms underpinning operation of these materials and devices are understood on the nanometer level of individual defects. Only by probing these phenomena locally can we hope to link materials structure and functionality, thus opening pathway for predictive modeling and synthesis. While structures of these materials are now accessible on length scales from macroscopic to atomic, their functionality has remained Terra Incognitae. In this volume, we provide a summary of recent advances in scanning probe microscopy studies of local functionality of energy materials and devices ranging from photovoltaics to batteries, fuel cells, and energy harvesting systems. Recently emergent SPM modes and combined SPM-electron microscopy approaches are also discussed. Contributions by internationally renowned leaders in the field describe the frontiers in this important field.
Additive Manufacturing for Bio-Composites and Synthetic Composites focuses on processes, engineering, and product design applications of bio-composites and synthetic composites in additive manufacturing (AM). It discusses the preparation and material characterization and selection, as well as future opportunities and challenges. Reviews the latest research on the development of composites for AM and the preparation of composite feedstocks. Offers an analytical and statistical approach for the selection of composites for AM, including characterization of material properties. Emphasizes the use of environmentally friendly composites. Analyzes the lifecycle including costs. Considers potential new fibers, their selection, and future applications. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the application of advanced composite materials in AM and is aimed at researchers, engineers, and advanced students in materials and manufacturing engineering and related disciplines.
Solid state batteries with a lithium metal electrode are considered the next generation of high energy battery technology. Unfortunately, lithium metal is prone to harmful protrusion or dendrite growth which causes dangerous cell failure. Within this work the problem of protrusion growth is tackled by deriving a novel electro-chemo-mechanical theory tailored for binary solid state batteries which is then used to discuss the impact of mechanics on interface stability by numerical studies.
The rise of renewable energy responds to global warming, necessitating reliable storage like batteries. Though frequent use can affect their lifespan, these have become smaller, simpler, and more adaptable. Recent technological progress has improved batteries' longevity and efficiency, with costs dropping due to mass production. This book examines different battery types, their evolution, and the cutting-edge materials enhancing their performance, particularly focusing on metal oxides in various battery technologies. Exploring advanced materials for batteries is not just a theoretical exercise but a practical journey into the future of energy. This book is an essential guide, tracing the evo...
