On Stony Ground presents a historical ethnographic account of a generation of Mennonites from the Soviet Union who, following Russia’s revolution and civil war, immigrated to Manitoba during the 1920s. James Urry examines how they came to terms with a new land and with their new neighbours, including other Mennonites, Ukrainians, French Canadians, and Indigenous Peoples. The book discusses the impact of the Great Depression and how the immigrants struggled with their identity in Canada as Hitler and Stalin rose to power in Germany and the USSR. It reveals the immigrants’ desire to maintain their faith, language, and culture while encouraging their children to take advantage of an education conducted mainly in English. On Stony Ground explores how prosperity following the Second World War helped the immigrants to build a community in conjunction with others, including Mennonites and non-Mennonites, and to accept their new home in Canada.
Heinrich Janzen (ca.1752-1824) emigrated with his family from Rosenkranz, Prussia to Schoenwiese, South Russia, where he served as the elder of the Frisian church. Direct descendant Jacob H. Janzen (1885-1938) married Maia Wiebe and emigrated from South Russia to Rabbit Lake, Saskatchewan. Descendants and relatives lived in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and elsewhere. Jacob Harder (1819-1904), son of Peter Harder (1788-1853) and Maria Friesen (1795-1849), married Maria Abrams (1819-1902) in 1839. They had thirteen children. They lived in South Russia. They immigrated to Canada in 1875. Ancestors, descendants and relatives lived mainly in Russia, Manitoba, Mexico and Paraguay.

The editor provides an important new scholarly tool for locating and understanding the enormous expansion of scholarly research dealing with the sociology of Canadian Mennonites, Hutterites and Amish. Although the book includes research from American scholars, the editor devotes special attention to Canadian works concerning these important and interesting minorities. Using the tripartite division of Mennonites, Hutterites and Amish, the bibliography includes 800 entries each with a concise summary and evaluation. The entries are listed under the subheadings: books, theses, articles and unpublished manuscripts. Preceding the bibliography itself is an essay by the editor originally presented to the Canadian Sociology and Anthropology Association. The essay outlines the differing conceptual assumptions of the researchers included in the book, the major methodologies employed and the main conclusions to be drawn from their work.
