Souls in Dispute

Throughout the Middle Ages, the Iberian Peninsula was home to a rich cultural mix of Christians, Jews, and Muslims. At the end of the fifteenth century, however, the last Islamic stronghold fell, and Jews were forced either to convert to Christianity or to face expulsion. Thousands left for other parts of Europe and Asia, eventually establishing Sephardic communities in Amsterdam, Venice, Istanbul, southwestern France, and elsewhere. More than a hundred years after the expulsion, some Judeoconversos—descendants of Spanish and Portuguese Jews who had converted to Christianity—were forced to flee the Iberian Peninsula once again to avoid ethnic and religious persecution. Many of them joine...

This book analyzes the transformation of the Mexican political system during the last four decades, focusing on its presidential elections. As the country has shifted away from an authoritarian political system, ruled by a hegemonic party, it has become a more moderate, pluralistic society, marked by electoral competition between contestant parties. Using a mixed methodology, including historical and statistical analysis, the author argues that the fight for clean and fair elections in Mexico has a long history of contestation and conflict, entailing at once movements towards democracy yet also processes of de-democratization.” /div

In "The Inquisition in the Spanish Dependencies," Henry Charles Lea meticulously examines the complex and often harrowing history of the Spanish Inquisition in its colonial territories. Through a rigorous historical lens and an analytical approach, Lea delves into the sociopolitical and religious dynamics that shaped the practices of the Inquisition, highlighting its role in consolidating Spanish authority and cultural hegemony. His literary style combines meticulous archival research with a narrative clarity that brings to life the often obscured experiences of those who lived under its shadow. By situating the Inquisition within the wider context of Spanish imperialism, Lea enriches our un...

The modern metropolis has been called 'the symbol of our times', and life in it epitomizes, for many, modernity itself. But what to make of inherited ideas of modernity when faced with life in Mexico City and São Paulo, two of the largest metropolises in the world? Is their fractured reality, their brutal social contrasts, and the ever-escalating violence faced by their citizens just an intensification of what Engels described in the first in-depth analysis of an industrial metropolis, nineteenth century Manchester? Or have post-industrial and neo-globalized economies given rise to new forms of urban existence in the so-called developing world? Life in the Megalopolis: Mexico City and São ...

Courting Democracy in Mexico

Courting Democracy in Mexico

This book documents Mexico's gradual transition to democracy, written from a perspective which pits opposition activists' post-electoral conflicts against their usage of regime-constructed electoral courts at the centre of the democratization process. It addresses the puzzle of why, during key moments of Mexico's 27-year democratic transition, opposition parties failed to use autonomous electoral courts established to mitigate the country's often violent post-electoral disputes, despite formal guarantees of court independence from the Party of the Institutional Revolution (PRI), Mexico's ruling party for 71 years (preceeding the watershed 2000 presidential elections). Drawing on hundreds of author interviews throughout Mexico over a three-year period and extensive archival research, the author explores choices by the rightist National Action Party (PAN) and the leftist Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) between post-electoral conflict resolution via electoral courts and via traditional routes - mobilization and bargaining with the PRI-state.
