For the first time, in 35 years, here is a complete analytical and comparative study of the only two English translations of this marvelous work. This particular effort makes references back to our copy of the Spanish text for clarity. More importantly, this effort is coordinated with Teresa of Avila's works. Thus an additional 400 notes, in combination with comparatives between the variant references are supplied. This work has been translated by the sisters of Stanbrook. Francisco de Osuna draws on the ancient doctrine of the spiritual senses to describe the psychological experience that takes place as spiritual attentiveness is gradually deepening. He takes up the traditional analogies of the darkness of blindness, the silence in deafness, the passivity in dumbness to draw out the ways that the prayer of recollection belongs to the apophatic way of contemplating the divine. He connects and places his reflections in the context of the gospel beatitudes - the vision of humanity described by Jesus Christ.

Wycliffite Spirituality

In one series, the original writings of the universally acknowledged teachers of the Catholic, Protestant, Eastern Orthodox, Jewish, and Islamic traditions have been critically selected, translated, and introduced by internationally recognized scholars and spiritual leaders. Until now, the mainstream historiography of Wycliffism has largely ignored the positive spirituality that Wycliffite dissenters associated with their faith. Even anthologies of Wycliffite writings have focused on their key polemical tenets rather than their spirituality. Wycliffite Spirituality offers a new, refreshing approach with a collection of texts showing that Wycliffites were as keenly interested in the spiritual...

In Mystical Theology and Contemporary Spiritual Practice several leading scholars explore key themes within the Christian mystical tradition, contemporary and historical. The overall aim of the book is to demonstrate the relevance of mystical theology to contemporary spiritual practice. Attention is given to the works of Baron von Hugel, Vladimir Lossky, Margery Kempe, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Thomas Merton, and Francisco de Osuna, as well as to a wide range of spiritual practices, including pilgrimage, spiritual direction, contemplative prayer and the quotidian spirituality of the New Monasticism. Christian mystical theology is shown to be a living tradition, which has vibrant and creative new expressions in contemporary spiritual practice. It is argued that mystical theology affirms something both ordinary and extraordinary which is fundamental to the Christian experience of prayer.

A manual for spiritual direction, this guide is also intended to be a contribution to the interface between modern depth psychology, contemplative prayer and the Christian mystical tradition. It has been written in response to an increasing hunger for spiritual direction and discernment from a holy Mother, which St Teresa can provide.

Abandonment to Divine Providence

“All will be well if we live in the present moment and give ourselves over into the loving hands of our provident God.” —From the IntroductionAbandonment to Divine Providence by Jean-Pierre de Caussade, SJ, is considered one of the world’s great spiritual classics. This collection of brief meditations has guided countless men and women—including many canonized saints—toward greater peace, trust, and confidence in God’s provident love since its first printing in 1751. This new edition revives de Caussade’s wisdom for contemporary readers with an updated but faithful translation of the original French, plus new reflections and prayers by Sr. Mary Mark Wickenhiser, FSP, to help readers live and grow in trustful surrender to God in their daily lives. A rare appendix includes four short treatises and several prayers on the theme of abandonment by prominent French spiritual writers, including St. Francis de Sales, from the eighth French edition of Abandonment to Divine Providence. Includes a Forward by Fr. Timothy Gallagher, OMV.
