Human and Organisational Factors

This open access book addresses several questions regarding the implementation of human and organisational factors (HOF) so that recent improvements in industrial safety can be built upon. It addresses sources of frustration in senior management with high expectations of operational recommendations and disquiet on the part of HOF specialists struggling to have an impact on high-level decision making. The brief explores these issues with an emphasis on examples and lessons learned based on the experience of its authors, who come from different academic disciplines and various industrial sectors such as oil and gas, energy and transportation. It then offers some ways forward for a better consideration of HOF in hazardous companies with a view of promoting safety and facing challenges in a rapidly changing world.

The goal for ergonomics has always been to adapt work, work environments, and machines to humans. But is this goal still sufficient? Does it satisfy the needs of the individual or of societies and organizations as they operate now? Constructive Ergonomics provides an answer to these questions. Rooted both in the academic world and in the world of practitioners of the domain, it details a constructive, developmental view where ergonomics seeks to eliminate the factors and conditions that impede performance and development. This book advocates that ergonomics cannot remain content with a limited and static view of adaptation, a view that would restrict its goal to designing systems that are su...

This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book investigates why, despite more and more resources devoted to safety training, expectations are not entirely met, particularly in the industrial sectors that have already achieved a high safety level. It not only reflects the most precious viewpoints of experts from different disciplines, different countries, with experiences in various industrial fields at the cutting edge of theories and practices in terms of safety, professionalization and their relationships. It also consolidates the positioning of the Foundation for an Industrial Safety Culture, highlighting what is currently considered at stake in terms of safety training, taking into account the system of constraints the different stakeholders are submitted to. It reports some success stories as well as elements which could explain the observed plateau in terms of outcome. It identifies some levers for evolution for at-risk industry and outlines a possible research agenda to go further with experimental solutions.

Ergonomics Problems in Process Operations documents the proceedings of a symposium organized by the Institution of Chemical Engineers in association with the Ergonomics Society, held at the University of Aston in Birmingham, on 11-13 July 1984. The objectives of the symposium are: to enable engineers from process, power, and offshore industries to exchange information and experience with ergonomics specialists; to discuss ergonomics problems in process operations and methods of recognizing and controlling these problems; and to explore effective ways of applying ergonomics research to solving process operations problems. The symposium is intended to appeal to operations and maintenance manag...

Language in Late Capitalism

This book examines the ways in which our ideas about language and identity which used to be framed in national and political terms as a matter of rights and citizenship are increasingly recast in economic terms as a matter of added value. It argues that this discursive shift is connected to specific characteristics of the globalized new economy in what can be thought of as "late capitalism". Through ten ethnographic case studies, it demonstrates the complex ways in which older nationalist ideologies which invest language with value as a source of pride get bound up with newer neoliberal ideologies which invest language with value as a source of profit. The complex interaction between these m...

Safety Cultures, Safety Models

The objective of this book is to help at-risk organizations to decipher the “safety cloud”, and to position themselves in terms of operational decisions and improvement strategies in safety, considering the path already travelled, their context, objectives and constraints. What link can be established between safety culture and safety models in order to increase safety within companies carrying out dangerous activities? First, while the term “safety culture” is widely shared among the academic and industrial world, it leads to various interpretations and therefore different positioning when it comes to assess, improve or change it. Many safety theories, concepts, and models coexist today, being more or less appealing and/or directly useful to the industry. How, and based on which criteria, to choose from the available options? These are some of the questions addressed in this book, which benefits from the expertise of its worldwide famous authors in several industrial sectors.

Outside the Lines

Contributors to this collection address the ways in which interdisciplinarity is defined, positioned, and handled by researchers, universities, and critics, and examine such topics as "myths" of interdisciplinarity, postmodern critiques of interdisciplinarity, interdisciplinarity and research grant allocation, women's studies, Canadian studies, environmental studies, and "emerging" disciplines. The collection combines a theoretical examination of disciplinarity and interdisciplinarity as forms of knowledge production and organization with practical information about the basic difficulties and conundrums involved in the practice of interdisciplinary research.

The broad and developing scope of ergonomics, the application of scientific knowledge to improve people's interaction with products, systems and environments, has been illustrated over the past sixteen years by the books that make up the Contemporary Ergonomics series. Presenting the proceedings of the Ergonomics Society's Annual Conference, the series embraces the wide range of topics covered by ergonomics. Chapters provide an insight into the current practice, present new research findings and form an invaluable reference source. Among the most interesting topics covered in this volume are rail safety, the development and applications of virtual reality and hospital ergonomics. Contemporary Ergonomics 2002 will appeal to all those who have an interest in people's interactions with their working and leisure environment, including designers, manufacturing and production engineers, health and safety specialists, occupational, applied and industrial psychologists, and applied physiologists.
