Before Louise Scherbyn founded the Women's International Motorcycle Association, she was simply a working girl who loved motorcycling--at a time when women weren't allowed to wear pants, roads weren't hard-topped, and handlebars could come apart while riding. The hardest part? Auxiliaries she looked to for support each proved to be the wrong fit--some uncomfortably, disastrously so. All Louise wanted was for women riders to have a proper space of their own. For that she would ultimately have to forge a new path. This book tells the fascinating story of Scherbyn's journey in forming the first stand-alone women-only motorcycle association. Chapters cover 225,000 miles and two decades' worth of community-building, hostilities, physical and professional attacks, recovery, sisterhood and more. Scherbyn paved the way for women motorcyclists across the world while facing a storm of threats and uncertainties, driving ahead with newfound friends and her singular, unifying vision for women who ride.

Bibliotheca Osleriana

During his tenure as the Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford from 1905-1919, Sir William Osler amassed a considerable library on the history of medicine and science. A Canadian native, Osler had studied at McGill University and decided to leave his collection of 7,600 items to its Faculty of Medicine. A catalogue, the Bibliotheca Osleriana, was compiled - a labour of love that took ten years to complete and involved W.W. Francis, R.H. Hill, and Archibald Malloch. Osler himself laid down the broad outlines of the catalogue and wrote many of the annotations.

This dictionary is the first attempt to identify systematically the large heterogeneous group of women's organisations that grew up from the early 19th century up to the beginning of the modern women's movement, from women abolitionists and Chartists through Social workers, nurses, suffragists and sexual reformers to women pilots, journalists and cricketers. The work brings together over 500 separate entities on a wide variety of societies, associations, clubs, unions and other professional, social and political bodies organised by women or for men.

From chatelaines to whale blubber, ice making machines to stained glass, this six-volume collection will be of interest to the scholar, student or general reader alike - anyone who has an urge to learn more about Victorian things. The set brings together a range of primary sources on Victorian material culture and discusses the most significant developments in material history from across the nineteenth century. The collection will demonstrate the significance of objects in the everyday lives of the Victorians and addresses important questions about how we classify and categorise nineteenth-century things. This volume on ‘Victorian Arts’ will include sources on painting sculpture, book illustration, photography and the much-neglected area of Victorian stained glass.
