Of Mice, Models, and Men

Too much emotion and insufficient fact. This paradox has long characterized the controversy surrounding animal research. Of Mice, Models, and Men is the first exhaustive treatment of all areas--empirical and conceptual--relevant to the use of animals in research. It is also the first study to combine regard for the welfare of laboratory animals with a knowledgeable acceptance of the continuing need for research involving animals. The book has another rare quality. It is virtually devoid of any of the emotional and exaggerated attacks that have characterized many of the other publications in this area. Instead, it presents, in a manner accessible to both sides, all the relevant historical, social, and scientific information required to form an opinion on the subject. The book thus achieves a most difficult goal--that of bridging the gap between researchers using animals and animal welfare advocates, while pointing out the need for a more active program to promote laboratory animal welfare.

Illusion Confusion

About the Book Illusion Confusion was written as a dream, a vision. It combines author CPO Bill Sneed’s military experiences in Vietnam and all the horrors of war that went along with it, and the unique way he met the girl of his dreams, who would become his wife. Read Illusion Confusion and see how Sneed found love in the midst of the perils of warfare. About the Author CPO Bill Sneed, USN (RET) DAV is retired from the Navy (twenty years) and was also in the combat zone of Desert Storm at age fifty with the Navy's Military Sealift Command. Afterward he was a sheriff's deputy for six years and a police officer for two years, both in the Reserve. Sneed enjoys retired life by reading, especially about the Vietnam War, and writing. He and his wife, Charlotte, have three children, who have blessed them with eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Part I, a condensed history of the state prepared by Hu Maxwell, ranges over everything from the first explorations of the Blue Ridge, the French and Indian War, and the Revolution to West Virginia geography and geology, formation of the state, and the Civil War in West Virginia. In Part II, Mr. Cutright lays out the history of the county, with emphasis on the Indian Wars, religious life, geography, formation of the county and its political and government...
