Onpersoonlijke herinneringen
De erfgename van een rijk geslacht trouwt met de foute man. In 1936, kort voor zijn dood en na een decennialange onderbreking in zijn carrière van schrijver, publiceerde Frans Coenen ‘Onpersoonlijke herinneringen’, een kroniek van het museum Willet-Holthuysen waarvan hij de conservator was. In dat Amsterdamse grachtenpand huisden onder andere de familie Diefenbach. Dochter Louise, niet bijzonder aantrekkelijk, moet zich tevredenstellen met een man die haar huwt omwille van haar geld. Ze probeert tegen beter weten in deze alcoholicus zonder drive om te vormen tot een dynamische echtgenoot, maar een drama is onvermijdelijk. Frans Coenen is de man die het leven ooit definieerde als ‘een illusieloos omlaaggaan naar de dood’ en hij kent geen genade voor zijn personages. Deze beknopte familiegeschiedenis is weleens vergeleken met de ‘Buddenbrooks’ van Thomas Mann en geldt als Coenens laatste belangrijke werk.
